Meet Transfer Intern Emily
Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I’m a sophomore here at W&M. I’m honored and excited to be a spring Transfer Intern in the admission office this semester, because I am so passionate about helping others find their home at William & Mary like I did. My transfer experience started this past fall when I left the large public university I attended freshman year and became a member of the Tribe. Ultimately, I chose to transfer to William & Mary because of its strong liberal arts program and small size. When I got here, I truly realized how caring and unique our community is, and I feel like that—more than any statistic—is the best part about this institution.
Outside of my classes and volunteering in the Admission Office, I try to involve myself in many different aspects of campus. I am a member of a social sorority, a contributor to The Flat Hat, and the design editor for Jump! Literary Magazine. My favorite place on campus is the terrace on a sunny day, and my favorite restaurant in Williamsburg is Aroma’s. Like any English major, I love reading and writing. The two books you’ll always find on my shelf are Bossypants by Tina Fey and Emma by Jane Austen.
As much as I wanted to come to William & Mary, it was surprisingly a hard choice to make. I was unsatisfied with the classes at my current school and didn’t feel a connection with many of the people I met there, but it had been my home for the past year. It was where I took my first college classes and slept in my first horrible dorm bed, and even if it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, it was the safer choice. Looking back on it now, I could have easily decided to stay and miss out on the experiences I had this year and the friendships I’ve made. But I decided to take the leap and transfer in the hopes that my happiness would improve, and it was even better than I hoped it would be.
I am so pleased to be an intern this semester and hopefully help others find their way to Williamsburg, and I hope you all enjoy reading a little bit about my transfer journey and my time at William & Mary!
