The End of Summer
Summer is ending. It’s a bittersweet fact marked by daily Facebook countdowns of how many days are left until the semester starts, back-to-school shopping commercials, and earlier sunsets. Since this is my first college summer, it’s seemed pretty long to me—3 and a half months as compared to the 2 months of summer during high school. I just got home last week after spending the last 10 weeks at W&M working 4 jobs, so now I have about 2 weeks of watching Netflix and enjoying my own bedroom before I move back to campus. As nice as it is to be home, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t missing my friends and the general insanity of the semester. This semester will undoubtedly be crazy—I am going to have a job and rush a sorority on top of regular classes and tour guiding, AMP, and Spotswood Society.
But I am so excited for sophomore year! Freshman year is all about establishing yourself, adjusting to the new environment and challenges, and getting involved. Sophomore year is all about furthering interests, making more new friends, and declaring a major.
Of course, I’m sad my freshman year is over, since nothing can quite compare to the excitement of those first few months on campus. Already the Class of 2016 is making W&M pancakes and declaring their enthusiasm for their respective future dorms. But as a sophomore, I feel like I know what’s up, so I don’t have to waste time figuring out what I want to do.
Fingers crossed for an awesome hurricane-free, earthquake-free fall semester. I’m so excited to get back to college and see everyone again!
