Cars, Trains, Planes, Oh My!
At the moment, I’m sitting in the Newport News airport waiting to go home for Spring Break! We have off an entire week of school so I’m going back home to Long Island for a few days and then to Florida with some friends. I’m super excited!
William & Mary was the furthest school that I applied to. I had assessed the transportation options to get to and from school and figured out that taking an airplane would be best for breaks. My parents do, however, drive me at the start and end of the year because of all the stuff for my dorm room.
Basically, wherever you hail from, you don’t have to worry about transportation. For in-state students, a lot either get picked up by their parents, get a ride by a fellow student, or take a short trip on the Amtrak train. The Amtrak station is conveniently right off campus. I have many friends that live further up north that take the train as well. If you live a greater distance away (like me, a seven hour drive!), flying would be considered the easiest and fastest way home. For example, my flight from Newport News to New York is just under an hour.
There are three airports near W&M: Newport News (30 minutes away), Norfolk (40 minutes away), and Richmond (1 hour away). The Student Assembly and Student Activities sponsors free shuttles for students to and from airports during breaks.
I love the distance. It’s always exciting to go back and forth and be in very different environments!
