Yule Log- Only 2 weeks away!

Amanda and Tiffany here! We are so excited about Yule Log this year. It is only 3 weeks away and provides a great way to relax during finals. Yule Log is a special ceremony held on campus every year on the Saturday between finals. It is a fun way to celebrate all of the different holidays. We have religious and cultural speakers from different cultural organizations on campus. In addition the WM Choir and the Gentlemen of the College (a WM acapella group) sing to add to the festivities. One of our favorite parts is that our Vice President of the college always reads a special rendition of “Twas the Night Before Finals” incorporating unique facts and happenings of the current school year. There is usually a special guest that comes way down from the North Pole to read us How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Even though it is President Reveley, he does a really good job convincing us that he is Santa Claus!

Now the reason that we call this ceremony Yule Log is because of the old tradition of the Yule Log. At the end of the ceremony, we pass a log through the crowd that each student touches in order to get good luck for the rest of finals. Last year, touching the Yule Log was the highlight of my fall semester! After that, we walk through the Wren Great Hall and throw a sprig of holly on the fire to throw our cares away. At the end we all hang out on ancient campus, near CW, and drink hot cider and eat cookies. It is just a great way for people to come together before the end of the semester!

Maybe next year we’ll see you there!!!
