Meet the Transfer Interns – Emily!
My name is Emily and I’m currently a junior here at W&M! I am majoring in English, and minoring in Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. Even though I’m technically an upperclassman, it’s only my second year here in beautiful Williamsburg. I transferred to William & Mary in fall 2014 from a large public school in Virginia, and it was a huge turning point in my college experience. This is my second year as a Spring Transfer Intern, and I couldn’t be more excited to help other potential transfers find their way to William & Mary!
Besides volunteering in the Office of Undergraduate Admission as a Spring Transfer Intern and a Tribe Ambassador, I am also on the executive board of my sorority and on the poetry board of the William & Mary Review. My favorite building on campus is Tucker Hall, because it’s home to the English department and my absolute favorite place to sit down with a cup of coffee and a Wawa quesadilla to write papers. What’s the best part about being a transfer student? Realizing that all of my hard work has paid off, and I’m finally home.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about my transfer experience, William & Mary, or anything else on your mind! I love talking to potential students, and hope I can help you fall in love with W&M the same way I have!

Loving these transfer intern blogs! More excited than ever to receive an admissions decision!
I was wondering, though, how many of your in-state public school credits transferred to W&M? I’m just nervous that a lot of my credits won’t be accepted at W&M, should I be accepted. Thanks again for your insight, Emily!
Nervous Transfer,
I totally understand being nervous! The good news is, we have an awesome team at W&M that goes through all of your credits with you once you’re admitted, and you have the opportunity to send them syllabi and course information to make sure your credit hours transfer properly. Mine all went very smoothly, and I’m sure yours will too.
Good luck with the admissions process!

Is there a way to find out how many of your credits will transfer before you accept the decision? Also, I want to ask about the curriculum and academics at William and Mary. I am concerned that my gpa will drop so much that I won’t be accepted into grad school. How would you describe the difficulty of the school, especially the Kinesiology and Health Science program? Thanks!
Excited&Nervous,
Congratulations on your acceptance! Unfortunately, there’s not a 100% way to know how many of your credits will transfer. In my experience, the coordinator with the school does an awesome job of making sure everything lines up and contacting you if something doesn’t make sense. I wouldn’t worry about it! As far as graduate school goes, it’s true that your current GPA won’t transfer with you, but the graduate schools you apply to will see that you’re a transfer and they should take into account both GPAs. I’m an English major and can’t speak to an experience with the Kinesiology department personally, but I have a lot of friends who love the program. William & Mary is a challenging environment, but not unreasonably so. If you were accepted to the school, that means the admissions office knows you are well-equipped to handle the curriculum, and there are many resources here to help you succeed! I recommend reaching out to faculty in the department you’re interested in for more information: http://www.wm.edu/as/kinesiology/faculty/index.php
Best,
Emily
