My 15 kb of fame

I was walking across campus to teach a PhotoShop class when I came across Mark Hinders in that no-man’s land between Barrett and Washington and McGlothlin-Street Hall.

“Hey, did you know you’re on Google Street View?” he asked.

“What? Me, myself?,” I asked in return. “Really?”

“Yeah! Right by the little white picket fence,” he said. “It could have easily been me, since I walk by there all the time, but they happened to get you.”

Well, I could hardly wait to unlimber my laptop and look myself up. There I was, walking along near the intersection of Jamestown Road and Indian Springs Road. Under magnification, the photo is blurry, but you can just make out my expression of thoughtful devotion to College and Commonwealth as I stride purposefully past the little picket fence, just across from Phi Beta Kappa Circle.

I did some street-view Googling up and down Jamestown Road and didn’t see anyone that I recognize, but I did notice the sign advertising “Superman,” a production staged Phi Beta Kappa Hall. We can date the Google Street View photo to fall of 2007, as Superman played in October of that year.

I don’t know anyone else who appears on Street View. I’m just thankful that I’m not big enough to show up on Google Earth.
