Spotted in Swem
As I was sitting at a computer in Swem Library I observed what I hope was the beginning of a beautiful friendship…
On the computer next to me was a student with an admittedly cool graph on his screen. (I’ll call him Graph-Guy.) As Graph-Guy worked on his computer and listened to whatever was coming through his headphones, another student walked by. (I’ll call him Backpack-Boy.) Backpack-Boy stopped behind Graph-Guy and began staring intently at the graph on the screen. Oblivious, Graph-Guy kept working until Backpack-Boy tapped on the shoulder. “What kind of graph is that?” asked Backpack-Boy. This simple question then sparked an extended conversation between two strangers about graphs, studies, and other academic thoughts.
Yes, we all learn a lot in class, but the curiosity of the Tribe means we’ll ask strangers about an interesting graph– and even better, we’ll take the time to answer those questions. I was excited to observe (and share) just this one example of W&M student’s willingness and excitement to learn from each other.
I love this college.
