Going Green at School!

With the new school year approaching we all have the same question on our minds – how am I going to be green on campus? Hahaha well, maybe not all of us. But, either way I’m writing now to give you a couple of tips that will help you live sustainably at the college whether you’re on or off campus!
- Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!
We are incredibly lucky to have so many recycling bins around campus. You should use them! The school bins only recycle plastics #1 and #2, so make sure to check your plastics before dumping. Also, if you have any used batteries or old tech devices you can recycle those at Swem. Don’t forget to take a reusable mug when getting coffee. Always have a water bottle with you. Invest in a reusable to-go box. Reuse school supplies. Print double sided (which you can do at pretty much every printer on campus). - Save energy
Turn out the lights when you leave the room. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Carpool. If you have air conditioning, and can control it, make sure it’s not left on when no one’s around. So simple! - Conserve Water
Yes, even though Williamsburg is often flooded it is still important to conserve water. Try taking shorter showers and turning off the sink when you brush your teeth. Also, if you have a leaky faucet – get it fixed. Work-order it if you’re on campus or call your landlord if you’re off. - Healthy Eating
Not only will it help you keep off the freshman 15, eating more fruits and veggies is good for the planet. Try eating less meat or even cutting it out of your diet for one day a week (Meatless Monday, for instance). Go to the Williamsburg Farmer’s Market, which is on most Saturdays from 8am-12pm, and buy some local produce! - Get involved!
There are so many ways for you to get involved in sustainability at William & Mary. A few organizations you could join include SEAC, AMP Sustainability & Diversity, and/or the Committee on Sustainability. If you are too busy to join, giving them your support by attending their events is another great way to get involved!
These are just a few easy ways you can keep the green in green and gold! Hope you have a very sustainable semester!

lovely school..love it so much..lets keep william&mary school green 🙂
As far as #1 goes you forgot to add refuse to your R list. Refuse to use single use plastic bottles and invest in your own water bottle. Water is free at any fountain on campus and you won’t be generating any trash at all. You’ll save money and help the environment and all college students can benefit from these two things. You can also refuse to use plastic bags on campus and switch to your own canvas bags, refuse to drive and reside on campus, and refuse to purchase new textbooks instead investing in used ones. I plan on putting up several as I continue to develop my college tips & advice website. Thanks for posting a green blog. The more students know the better our environment will be. Looking forward to your future posts.
