King and Queens Ball

With just two short weeks until the end of classes, several end-of-year celebrations are coming up for W&M students. It’s hard to pick just one, but I am going to talk about one of my favorite celebrations, King and Queens Ball!

Here is my a'cappella group last year at King and Queens!

Soon, a huge white tent will be set up in the Sunken Gardens. Seeing it while walking to classes during the week really gets the students excited for what is always an awesome night (although in my past two years here it has rained every time!) Underneath the tent, a wooden dance floor is constructed and dozens of white tables are set up. Come Friday night, a live band will take the stage and play for hours as the students dance and sing along. There is a cash bar in the back for the 21-and-up crowd so some singing gets pretty loud by the end of the night.

In the middle of the dance, our President will come onstage and give a toast to the graduating seniors who are celebrating their last King and Queens. After, one of our a’cappella groups will take the stage and lead all the students in the Alma Mater. Afterwards, the singing and dancing will continue until past midnight.

Freshmen usually go as couples but by the time you’re an upperclassman like me, you go with a group of your friends and just end up dancing in a big circle (think middle school dances, you know what I’m talking about). It is always a great time for students and an awesome way to celebrate the completion of another semester!
