So Close
Admit It! Things don’t get easier once you’ve actually submitted your applications (or at least the stress level doesn’t decrease as much as you thought). You’re on pins and needles wanting to know if your materials arrived, when decisions will be released, what those decisions will be. Well, with each passing week we are getting closer and closer to being able to answer all of those questions for you.
As for the status of your application materials, we are so close to completing all applications (to date we have only about 1700 applications still being processed meaning we are trying to match your Common App with other required materials– nearly 90% of our freshman applications are complete and out for review). Remember, you will be emailed either way regarding your application status. Either you will receive an email in the next few weeks letting you know your application is complete, or you will receive an email letting you know what materials are missing. If you receive the latter email, do not worry. Just submit the requested materials as soon as possible. No penalty or disadvantage will be assessed.
Once all applications are complete and reviewed, my colleagues and I will begin our Committee process and finalize all decisions. We anticipate being able to release decisions by early April at the latest. Decisions will be released electronically via email. Once we have an exact date for decision notification, we will post that date to our website, this blog, and our social media outlets. I will also continue to blog on the types of decisions we make and how we made them.
Until then, try to relax, take a deep breath, and just enjoy this time when applications and college decisions do not have to be on the forefront of your mind. That’s what April is for.

Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
Last year, were decisions sent electronically or via mail?
Last year, decisions were sent by mail however we will deploy decisions via email this year as stated in the blog. We will email the applicant only at the email address he/she used in the Common App.
When will transfer applicants hear from you? And can we check the status of our application on the common app website?
Paige,
Transfer applicants go through the same process as freshman applicants. We will email you when we download your application from Common App and we will email you again when we complete your application. You cannot check your application status via Commo App’s website; only via our emails.
Given that the transfer deadline is still 3 weeks away, we are still focusing primarily on freshman applicants but we process transfer applications as they come in and will focus our energies on those more in March.
Hello, Wendy.
I have been following your Admit It! posts and enjoy the insight and humor.
I understand Admissions and Financial Aid are separate but I am curious if you know why the FAFSA application provides tools to allow the student to sort the schools? Do schools see the other schools listed on a student’s FAFSA and infer some meaning, positive or negative, from the order in which their school is placed on the list?
Thank you for your time.
Wayne
Wayne,
Glad you enjoy Admit It! My colleagues and I enjoy writing blogs and conversing with prospective students and families through them.
Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your question for all schools. Certainly for W&M, neither the Admission Office nor the Financial Aid Office sees any information about the other schools to which you are submitting the FAFSA. So W&M has no idea what other schools you apply to based on how you complete the FAFSA. You can contact our Financial Aid Office (757-221-2420) and see if they know where that data is stored and if it’s disseminated to schools as they work with the FAFSA and we don’t.
Thank you for the advice and encouragement. Prospective students truly appreciate it as we await April! We appreciate your time.

Any time Sarah. We are currently in the process of emailing those students whose applications we cannot complete letting them know what we’re missing and how to submit it.
Hi Wendy, love your blog, I check it as often as possible!
I have a question though, I have yet to receive an email either saying that William and Mary has completed my application or that I still haven’t sent all supplements. Should this worry me because it is almost March? Or should I just wait patiently?
Thanks and keep up the stellar work!

Alexandra,
Glad you enjoy the blog.
If you have not received any email after the initial one confirming receipt of your Common App, and you are a freshman applicant, you should call us ASAP (757-221-4223) so that we can look you up in our database and see where the issue is. It could be something as simple as that we did send the second email but it got lost in your spam or something but in case something in your application is missing, it would be good for you to know what it is so that you can re-submit the item(s) and get your application completed.
