Running

I am addicted to running. Half-marathons are my race of choice. I love running in Williamsburg because there are many different routes available including many off of roads.  Here are some of my favorites:

Colonial Capitol Bikeway.  Ultimately it will connect Williamsburg to Richmond.  Currently, I can pick it up about a mile from my house and run up to 16 miles on it.  it is paved but off the road.  Most of it is tree lined so provides shade during the summer time.

Nature Path behind Jamestown High School. A wooded and dirt path, you can get away from all cars and be one with nature 🙂 It is not uncommon to see some kind of wildlife during a run.  Often deer and turtles but I have seen foxes, beavers and eagles.  My daughter talks of seeing snakes.  Using this path alone you can run about 4 miles but it connects to the Colonial Capitol Bikeway and several neighborhoods so you can easily build a longer run.

Old Country Road (aka Carter’s Grove Road).  A favorite among local runners especially to get in some hill work.  Not generally a lot of hills in Williamsburg.  The is also the site of the Colonial Half Marathon held every February.  To get to it, go to South England Street and run away from Colonial Williamsburg.  Keep running… You will pass the golf course for the Inn, keep running… you will come to a circle with a gate at the end, keep running.  You are now on the Old Country Road.  I have never run to the end of it but I’m told it takes you all the way to Carter’s Grove and that it is about 8 miles long one way.

Colonial Williamsburg.  It is 1 mile from the Wren Building to the Capitol Building. Don’t forget to touch the wall.  This is a fun people watching run as you dodge tourists and horse droppings.

There are also lots of paths behind the W&M Rec Center.  I haven’t explored them in many years but see runners going in and coming out all the time.  I’ll have to check them out soon.

Gotta run.
