No News is Not Bad News
We Admit It! Our little application engine that could is still chugging and chugging up that proverbial hill. While we are making good progress, it’s a slow and steady race (okay, we’ve now probably used more than enough children’s story metaphors). Suffice it to say there are still thousands of submitted applications that have yet to make it to our servers. There are even more that have made it to our server but are not yet complete.
Without going into too much detail, just know that once you click submit, your application will make its way through several steps before actually being downloaded into our application database. The application engine is a complicated one, but it works. Once it does get to our server, it will go through numerous additional steps after that to be matched with your other application materials.
Suffice it to say if you still haven’t heard anything from us since submitting your application, there’s no need to panic. That’s incredibly normal, and there are thousands of other applicants in that boat along with you. Once we are at the point where we believe we’ve downloaded every submitted application, we will post that information. It’s only at that point that you should be concerned if you haven’t heard from us.
We receive and complete hundreds of files every day and send out corresponding emails to that extent to applicants and their parents. Just keep an eye on your inbox.
Again, thank you for your patience.

I just received the parent email confirming that the application is complete. Thanks W&M for doing this — much appreciated!
@E. Mack, that’s great. Your student should have received the same email today then also.
Can you tell me what special handling or consideration is afforded to legacy applicants? I know that some schools have an admissions officer or alumni officer who tracks applications and makes sure that qualified applicants who don’t make it on the first go-round get another look if they are children of alumni. Thank you for answering my question.
@Kimberly Barlow Cook, our legacy applicants go through the exact same review process as other applicants. Since all of our applicants are reviewed at least twice (and then often in Committee deliberations), every application gets a thorough look. We consider legacy a plus factor. It’s something working in those applicants’ favor. We actually did one of our Overheard in Committee blogs on this subject that might be helpful (http://blogs.wm.edu/2012/11/15/overheard-in-committee-its-that-time-of-year-again/)
Hi, I just had a quick question that I wanted clarified. So after being deferred to RD, I signed up for another ACT, and had planned on taking it late December, however the date was postponed to January due to weather and now im worried my scores wont reach your school in time 🙁
Also, if we were to write a letter to W&M, who would we address it to and should we just send it by email? Do you not recommend this?
@Hannah, if we can get the results by mid-to-late Feb. they can likely be considered. Too much after that and we cannot guarantee that they will be. If you wish to send a letter of continued interest you can send it via email to admission@wm.edu and just address it to the Admission Committee.
Ok, great! thank you for such a prompt response 🙂
Quick question: If we were deferred to RD, how do we update our common app with new activities and new test scores?
@Hannah, the same way you’d send the other updates. Just email us and make sure your scores are officially sent also through the testing agency.
But I added some new activities on the common app, but it says once its submitted (back in November) i can no longer alter it.
@Hannah, that’s correct. You cannot resubmit through Common App. Didn’t you ask on 1/14 about a letter? See the comments above from then. We provided out office email address and you can use that to send any relevant updates.
Yes, I did read that. Thank you. —I have my application ID saved on my phone, would this be helpful to include in any emails? Thank you for your help in clarifying this process!
@Hannah, Including your W&M ID (the 9 digit number beginning with 930) is helpful yes.
