Decisions, Decisions – #wm2020 (aka 2016 Regular Decision Admit Edition)
We Admit It! You are the few, the proud, the phenomenally talented students who have earned admission to the College of William & Mary. You were selected from nearly 15,000 applicants, all of whom were fantastic and talented individuals. In short, you are the best of the best. Yes, “Good Things” means what you think it means. You are IN. Congratulations on this fantastic accomplishment. It is our absolute pleasure to welcome you to the Class of 2020.
We use the term “earned” above because this accomplishment was exactly that: earned. You have spent countless hours challenging yourself in the classroom, intently studying for standardized tests and pushing yourself in your various involvements. All of this hard work has culminated in an admission offer, and we can’t wait to see what new heights you might achieve as a member of the Tribe.
Over the next few weeks the final step of your college search will begin: deciding where to spend the next four years of your life. While we will readily admit that we’re a bit biased, we think that William & Mary is a fantastic place to continue your educational journey. Just as it was when deciding where to apply, visiting schools is perhaps the best way to determine where to enroll and spend your next four years. As such, we have many exciting admitted student events taking place on campus in April. Our Day for Admitted Students will take place on April 16, and will feature students, faculty and staff from across campus who are all excited to welcome you to Williamsburg and show you all that W&M has to offer. If you cannot make it to our Day for Admitted Students, you are also welcome to attend one of our myWM Monday events on either April 11, April 18 or April 25. Each of these campus events will provide you with an inside look at the William & Mary undergraduate experience.
We also encourage you to explore the Welcome website (linked in your decision email), the #wm2020 tagboard, the Crim Tell Facebook page run by some of our student volunteers and the Class of 2020 Facebook group. All of these online resources are meant to help you learn more about our university, and to get you excited about potentially making Williamsburg your home.
For tonight (and likely the next several nights) you should take some time to celebrate with your family and friends. It’s been a long journey, but you can finally bask in the light at the end of the tunnel. We are dancing and celebrating and hope that you’re doing the same. We think that you would make a wonderful addition to the William & Mary community, and are eager for you to explore all that William & Mary has to offer.
Brad Harlan
Assistant Dean of Admission

You guys are the best and deserve all the applause and respect that you get and more. I cannot be more proud of my son for being accepted to #wm2020 . Thank you so much for extending this opportunity to him. Tough choices ahead, but I am rooting for W&M as the final decision. Go Tribe!!
@ATHiker, a BIG congratulations to you and your family on your son’s terrific accomplishment. We know how much goes in to getting a student to this point. It was an absolute pleasure reviewing your son’s application. We know he will accomplish great things at whichever school he decides to attend, but we’re happy to hear that we have you in our corner! Go Tribe.
We appreciate how well W&M communicates, whether it be serious or light-hearted. It’s great to see a nationally ranked institution with a welcoming personality! We’re glad you’ve taken the time and effort to set yourselves apart. Our son has a lot to consider over the next few weeks. I’m sure your “Day for Admitted Students” will mirror what we have experienced so far and that it will ultimately solidify his decision.
@L Noble, it is our pleasure to communicate so openly with our applicants and their families. Congratulations to your son on this fantastic accomplishment! We look forward to welcoming you to campus on April 16 for our Day for Admitted Students. Until then, take care, and Go Tribe.
We are thrilled at our son’s acceptance! He is currently in Italy and returns on Wednesday. Will there still be room in the Day for Admitted Students if he waits until his return to sign up? I know other schools have sessions that fill up quickly.
Thank you.
@M Doyle, absolutely! Your son is welcome to register for our Day for Admitted Students once he returns from his trip. We look forward to hosting you on April 16, and hope that your son is having a fantastic time in Italy. Go Tribe!
Thank you! We are looking forward to our Wliiam and Mary experience! See you on the 16th!
what do you look for in students?
@Melissa Tunstall, you ask a terrific question. There is no set type of student that we look for during our application review process, nor are there set GPA’s, test scores or extracurricular involvements that a student must have in order to be admitted. The beauty of our holistic review process is that it allows us to take each part of an application into consideration, so that we can get a sense for all of the strengths that an individual brings to the table. Each part of an application (academic rigor, academic performance, standardized testing, extracurricular involvements, essays and letters of recommendation) are important in their own right, and let us know your skills and talents both inside and outside the classroom. There is a place for all types of students on our campus, whether you’re a scientist, athlete, artist, writer or someone who has has any other interests and passions. Part of the beauty of William & Mary is that there is no typical William & Mary student – collectively, our students create a wonderfully diverse, dynamic, welcoming and driven campus community.
I am currently registered for the Day for Admitted Students and the Monroe Scholars weekend. Unfortunately, I just found out that I will be unable to attend. Is there someone I need to email to let them know I cannot make it?
@WM2020! congratulations on your acceptance to both William & Mary and the Monroe Scholars program! We are sorry to hear that you will no longer be able to join us this weekend, though we of course understand. In order to change your registration, please email Assistant Dean Lauren Pettengill at lauren@wm.edu. We wish you all the best as you make your final college decision. Go Tribe!
Thanks so much for your help!
I am thrilled to be admitted into the class of 2020 but unfortunately will not be able to attend William and Mary this fall. My decision is almost solely based on cost for any who are wondering- the school looks incredible and nothing about the actual institution went into my choice. At any rate, who do I contact to officially share the unhappy news?
@Grace Haring, we are sad to hear that you will not be joining us next fall, though we have no doubt that you are going to accomplish fantastic things at whichever school you have selected. It was an absolute pleasure to review your application, and we wish you all the best going forward. In order to officially notify our office, you can simply send an email to us at admission@wm.edu and we will arrange to have your application withdrawn. Take care, and forever, Go Tribe.
