Decisions, Decisions — #wm2018 (also known as the Admitted Edition)
We Admit It! You all blow us away. You are smart, talented, accomplished, interesting individuals. Out of the over 14,500 applications, you stood out. We couldn’t be more excited for what awaits the Class of 2018. Yes, “Good Things” means what you think it means. Congratulations! You’re in.
We encourage you to visit the welcome website linked in your “Good Things” email. There you’ll find tons of info about how to visit campus as an admitted student (Day for Admitted Students, April 12, is the bomb if we do say so ourselves), a timeline of what’s to come, all of our Class of 2018 social media outlets and so much more about what we hope is your future alma mater. There’s even a welcome video we made in your honor (and we Admit It!, it brought some of us to tears – in a happy way of course).
In the coming days you’ll receive more information in the mail. Your admission package includes much of the information on the welcome website, but also additional information about tuition and financial aid notifications (those who applied for aid will receive an email notification in the next week or so and will be able to view their package online), enrollment deposit information, an admission letter signed by Dean Broaddus and a little W&M swag just for you.
In the meantime, scream, shout, pat yourself on the back, do a happy dance. You’ve earned it. Oh, and post your reactions on social media using #wm2018. Tribe Pride is a powerful thing. The #wm2018 hashtag is just one example.
Congratulations again from all of us in the Admission Office. We hope to see you on campus in the fall.
Wendy Livingston ’03, M.Ed. ‘09
Associate Dean of Admission

CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHO GOT IN! My heart is so warm for everyone getting into W&M right now, and I hope you guys make the decision to join the Class of 2018. 🙂
good luck to everyone!!!!!
DD just got her email welcoming her to the class if 2018. So excited right now.
Were all of the W and M scholarship recipients notified? If not, when will the results be released.
Sorry for the bad grammar in my previous post. I am just so happy right now.
Were all of the W and M scholarship recipients notified? If not, when will the results be released?
I am beyond excited right now. I got an email that says “Good Things”
Extremely psyched right now. Is this real life?
AHH I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS! Thank you so much! I’m still giddy with excitement – this is surreal.
So happy for everyone. Remember to share the good news with the #wm2018 hashtag and see the Tribe Pride live on our Tagboard (http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/welcome/getconnected/tagboard/index.php)
@Harsha, yes. 99% of scholarship recipients were notified earlier this month. The few remaining ones will get notified in the mailed package.
@EDStudent and all blog followers, all decision emails have left our server and are in your in-boxes or on their way. We will continue to monitor comments but may not respond until tomorrow as we let decisions be reviewed and sink in.
I was just wondering what the out of state acceptance rate was?
@Out of State Admitted, we generally admit around 25-28% of the OOS students who apply.
We’re so proud of our daughter Alison for being accepted to the class of 2018! She’s the third generation our family to become a member of the Tribe!
My daughter is thrilled and loved the funny and uniquely W&M acceptance message! Thank you Admit It for your amusing insight and assistance over these many months. We all appreciate the Admission Staff’s hard work. Congratulations to the new Tribe members and good luck to the entire HS Class of 2018 as you embark on your new adventures!
Any hints as to when jDP decisions will be released if they weren’t in the Good Things email? Thanks much.
OOS Applicant, we generally hope to do that within a few days of the general release but just like our general release, we refrain from predicting specifics as we need to ensure so many little steps come together to make sure we get those decisions out also.
Thanks! I think this blog is awesome, by the way.
We have heard the campus is transitioning to have all air conditioned dorms. Is this true? Do you know if Monroe Hall will be air conditioned for the start of Fall 2014? Thanks!
Congratulations to the Class of 2018 admitted students! Your hard work and talent indeed paid off!
Thank you for this wonderful ‘Admit it’ blog…it is even sweeter once you have indeed been “admitted”! 🙂
@OOS Admitted, that’s something you’d have to ask Residence Life. They would be the experts on that subject.
Thank you so much for all of your hard work, I’m so glad to be joining the tribe next year! I was also wondering when admitted students can expect their packet. Like how long does it usually take to ship? I sometimes have my mail delivered to the wrong house so I need to make sure that it did not get lost. Thanks! #wm2018
@jake g, congrats and welcome to the Tribe! The packet left our office Wednesday. Depending on how far away you are we generally say to allow a week. And remember, the content of that packet (minus the letter) are replicated on the welcome site linked in your email.
If I cannot make the 4/12 session, is there another opportunity in April to officially visit campus for accepted students? Or is it just the normal info sessions I did last year?
@Another OOS Student, yes, we offer myWM Mondays for admitted students who cannot come on April 12. If you visit the welcome site linked in your decision email, there’s a visit section which outlines all those events.
Should the Joint Degree results be in the mailed packet when it comes or should the student be still waiting for email notification?
@Happy WM Mom, those notifications should hopefully be in in-boxes soon.
Thanks. Although my child is overjoyed at the acceptance, he is still holding his breath over the Joint Degree decision. Hope it is really soon.
How many people applied to the joint programme/ what was the acceptance rate?
@Happy WM Mom, his joint degree decision should be in his in-box.
@Excited for WM, over 400 people applied for the joint degree programme. The admit rate varies a bit based on each major but generally it’s about the same as it is for W&M overall.
I had a question about the Day For Admitted Students on April 12 (sorry in advance if this isn’t the right place to ask). I read on the event description that check-in/registration on that day is from 8:30 to 9:30. If me and my family register online, will we still have to check in during that time? We’re not quite sure if we’ll make it to Williamsburg by 9:30 am that day. Is it okay to arrive late?
@Admitted Student, we recommend arriving within the registration window if you can but you can arrive late. It’s just the later you arrive, the more of the day’s sessions/events you miss.
@admitit, I know this seems like a silly question, but how hard exactly do we have to work to maintain our admittance? I do not mean to fail classes or get overly lazy but most of us have had our foot on the gas for a long time now and it would be nice to just slow down a bit and take it down a notch. What would it take for William and Mary to say “sorry you aren’t in anymore” and can that even happen? Thanks so much.
@Jake, yes, we can rescind an offer. As it states in your admit pack, “Remember that your offer of admission is contingent upon continuing to meet high standards of academic performance, personal conduct and completion of all work in progress.” If you have a significant downturn in grades or a change in your personal conduct, we will follow up with you and the Committee will decide whether or not you remain admitted. This doesn’t mean that we get angry with a few additional Bs or anything. Just remember there are thousands of students who weren’t admitted who would give anything to be. So those who are shouldn’t take that offer for granted.
If a parent only filled out the Fafsanand bit the CSS form, is there still time to do so and would this have affected the students chance at scholarship?
Ok try again , parent only did the Fafsa and not the CSS, would it affect the students chance at scholarship? Can the CSS still be done ? This is our first child going to college, we have 3 more and will be much better prepared!
@Antoinette, scholarships are awarded independent of any financial aid application so not completing any or all parts of that didn’t pact scholarship consideration. However we do need the CSS profile to consider awarding need-based aid. You should follow up with our Financial Aid Office ASAP. They will consider late applications but those are often not considered in time to get anything beyond loans. They can let you know if not submitting the CSS profile would make the application late or not.
Sooooo proud of my little girl for getting in! We did the “happy dance” and shouted like crazy! What an honor to be admitted to such a wonderful school…
Hi I am a freshman in college, seeking to start the transfer application this fall. I go to a relatively selective school at the moment (55% accepted) but I am not finding the academics as on par as my high school even though I am in the Honors Program. My GPA will be a 3.7 by the end of this semester, but I am involved in many activities that you will read about this fall.
Since just deciding about transferring, I really want to be competitive for the fall application process so what would you suggest doing between now and the application to really stand out ? Volunteer, pursue my interests, work as an intern ? Thanks so much.
@LaurenG, our biggest recommendation is to take courses that transfer and that showcase your academic abilities across disciplines and to maintain strong grades. Pursuing activities outside of class is great. What activities they are is absolutely up to you. You could consider attending a prospective transfer day next fall which might help provide some additional insight on W&M and our transfer process.
When are the financial aid details going to be sent? Our daughter was ecstatic to get in and is coming to visit (from out of state) for one of the Mondays but we still haven’t heard a word about the financial aid. Time is going by here…
@Julie H, most have been sent via email to the same email address we used to send the decision email. If your daughter doesn’t have hers, contact the Financial Aid Office to ensure they’re not waiting on any additional documentation from you.
