Decisions, Decisions — Spring Transfer Applicants
Admit It! You’ve been on the edge of your seat waiting for us to release decisions for spring transfer applicants. Well the wait is almost over. We will release those decisions via email today, Monday, December 5. We cannot provide a specific time. It takes several hours to upload each applicant’s individual email, send it and have it received by your email server. However, if all things go as planned your decision should be in your in-box later today. Decisions are sent to the email address you provided in your Common Application. How the sender information appears differs from email client to email client but “College of William & Mary” will appear somewhere in the sender info. The subject line will be either “Good News” (and yes that means what you think it means) or “William & Mary Admission Decision.” Please check all spam and junk filters. Should you not receive your decision email you can contact our office at 757-221-4223. We will resend all non-received decision emails using a different method each day after 5:00pm. We will also mail a hard copy of your decision to ensure you receive it.
Admitted Transfers: Congratulations and welcome to the Classes of 2013, 2014 and 2015! We’re thrilled to welcome you to the Tribe and look forward to your presence on campus in the spring. Take a five-minute break from studying for finals to pat yourself on the back, do a little happy dance or simply breathe a sigh of relief. You’re in! There is not much time between now and your arrival on campus in January so please follow all instructions provided on the website linked in your decision email and in the admission packet you will receive in the mail in the coming days (the admit pack is sent to a mailing address if you provided one, if not it will be sent to your permanent home address). Don’t forget to apply for on-campus housing if you desire it, to send in your enrollment deposit, to provide the necessary transfer credit evaluation materials, and oh yeah, to get excited about becoming part of the Tribe!
Those Not Admitted: Unfortunately there is no waitlist process for those applying for spring transfer (with the very small exception of those whose final transcripts will determine if they met the guaranteed admission agreements under which they were applying). There simply isn’t time to hear from those admitted and then make decisions on other applicants in the two weeks between now and the holiday break. So during the spring process, applicants are either admitted or denied. We know that a denial is not what you were hoping for, but our transfer application process is selective. In recent years we’ve seen fairly substantial increases in the number of transfer applicants and we generally admit between 40 and 45% of those who apply. This means some strong students are not admitted. We consider a wide variety of factors including course selection, credit load, grades, extracurricular involvements, life experience, perspective and so on. If W&M remains a top choice for you, we encourage you not to give up. We have admitted students who were previously denied. Because every transfer story is different we will be happy to work with any student to determine if and how they might become competitive for admission in the future.
Thank you for the time and effort each of you put into your applications. We enjoyed learning about each of you and wish you all the best as your college journey continues, whether that journey is at W&M or elsewhere.

Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
I GOT IN! so excited!!
I already have a question, trying to pay my deposit and can’t figure it out. I get an invalid payment option page? thanks for you help AND TRIBE PRIDE !!
Julia,
Read the instructions carefully on the deposit website. Some credit cards are not accepted so if you try to use a Visa for example you’ll get an error message.
If you use one of the approved credit cards and are still having trouble you can call us tomorrow morning.
First off, thanks for all the time you put into the applications, W&M. I have a ton of friends who simply love W&M and owe most of that to you guys.
And though I was rejected, I guess its a good thing. I’m not so far into my college career that I can’t change gears completely; clearly I should give up on history and graduate school, as I seem to think I’m more intelligent than I actually am. This at least will allow me to switch to something business-y I guess.
Lauren,
Do not take this decision as a reflection of your abilities or your intelligence. If a degree in history and graduate school are your dreams, pursue them. An admission decision, especially at a selective university like W&M, is a reflection of the strength of our applicant pool and the amazing accomplishments of so many students. It is not at all an indictment on those who did not get in. There are simply so many bright and talented young student out there (like yourself) and not enough space at our school for all of them.
I figured out it was my browser. The site said internet explorer is recommended, but safari ended up working for me.
Fantastic! As browswers get updates and the site is updated more browswers are working. We recommend IE for easiest use but if Safari worked that’s great. Welcome to the Tribe!
Hey, I just want to make sure my admission email is legit. The subject line is, Good News, and the sender is undergradadmission@wm.edu. I just want to make sure because all the emails I got last year were from admiss@wm.edu.
I’m really excited!
How many second semester freshmen applicants were there?
Also, what happens if the admitted student does not accept their spot? Would that spot open up?
Thank you.
Hunter, yes the email you received is legit. We use both email addresses as well as admission@wm.edu. Congrats!
Anthony,
Don’t have an exact count of how many freshmen applicants we had but generally it’s more than we have spaces for. As we said above, we don’t use a waitlist process for spring applicants. Generally if we offer a spot to a freshman they take it. If for any reason they don’t we then leave that spot vacant as there isn’t time to admit someone else between the time someone declines our offer and the start of the spring semester.
I noticed there is a facebook page for Fall 2011 transfer students. Will a similar page for Spring 2012 transfers be created and if so, when will it be up and running?
Danielle, because of the relatively short timing for spring transfers (between time of decison releases and enrollment) and because the College is closed for several weeks of that time period, we do not create a Facebook page for spring transfers. However, you are welcome to.
I received my acceptance email and I’m very excited! In fact, as soon as I got my email I went ahead and paid my enrollment deposit. My question is, how long does it take after paying the deposit before I can activate my email account? I thought it said a couple of hours, but I was so excited last night I couldn’t really focus on anything.
Congratulations Briana.
You can activate your W&M account at any time (instructions were at the bottom of the deposit website linked in your decision email).
Once we process your enrollment deposit (generally takes 24-48 business hours) you will receive an email from us providing instructions on how to activate your W&M email.
If you are a transfer student, do you still get to participate in the opening convocation? Just curiosity 😀
Alexis,
We don’t hold Convocation in the spring so if you’re admitted for spring you can participate the following fall. If you’re admitted as a fall transfer then yes, absolutely you can participate.
I enjoy reading W&M’s blog, especially when applicants share their excitement and thoughts about their results! I will also apply as a transfer for Fall 2012 enrollment. I was rejected when I was applying for freshman admission, but I really really love the school and the academic atmosphere! I have been trying to keep up my grades throughout these one year and a half in college. I have a question about the TOEFL score. After knowing W&M requires 100+ on TOEFL test, I retook TOEFL again in summer. But I got 99 on the test, would that hurt my application decision? Is 100 a cut-off score?
Piaoyang, so glad you’re still interested in W&M. You may want to check out one of our earlier transfer blogs on students who reapply to W&M after a previous denial (http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/04/27/overheard-in-committee-transfer-edition/).
100 is not a cut-off on the TOEFL. It’s simply a good benchmark. We will look at your overall score, your subscores, your essay(s) and any other materials we have to assess your English abilities when making an admission decision.
Thank you very much for answering my question promptly. I read that article too!It really ignites my fondness and raises a strong motivation for me to try my best to get into W&M.
I also have a question.(Because I have been thinking about transferring, I usually come up with new questions once in a while..I hope that is okay with you..)
I am having a difficult time to decide which professor I want recommendation from. I am currently majoring in Business Administration, and I really want to get into Mason School of Business. Although recommendation letter is not required by W&M,I still want to ask my professors to write one for me. So,should I ask my advisor(business department) for recommendation? or a professor knows me very well(like math and philosophy professors)? If I ask my philosophy professor to write a recommendation letter for me, would that hurt my chance since I am applying to the enrollment in Mason school of business?
If possible, can I have 3 recommendations from 3 of my professors who all know me very well? Will the admission view all these recommendations?
Thanks
We recommend no more than 1-2 letters of recommendation and you should pick professors who know you really well. You may also want to consider an English professor who can speak to your English abilities given your concern about your TOEFL test results.
The Office of Undergraduate Admission will review your letters of recommendation for purposes of admission to W&M. If we decide to admit you you will then apply to the Mason School of Business if you’re eligible (you will have junior standing and the pre-requisite courses). They will review your GPA but do not review letters of recommendation so whether you have one from a business professor or not will not impact your admission to the Mason School of Business.
Okay! Thank you very much for answering my question!I have more confidence on my application now! 🙂
yayy, i got in ! Just wondering if we can apply for housing before we submit our enrollment deposit and do we send our transfer credit evaluation info once our final grades are submitted ?
Brianna, congrats! You can apply for housing (that app opens Dec. 12 at 9:00am) before you submit your enrollment deposit (due Dec. 19). You need only submit transfer credit info if you decide to enroll and you should send that in as soon as you decide to enroll so the transfer credit evaluation process can begin.
More information will be provided in the admit pack you receive in the mail.
I received my admission packet in the mail yesterday, and I was wondering if I am supposed to put the mailing label on the return envelope or leave it attached to the response card. Thanks!
Brianna,
You leave it on the response card it’s attached to. It’s so you can verify all of the mailing information we have for you is correct.
I’m wondering why my enrollment deposit doesn’t show up on my banner accounts section- I got the email that you received the payment, but it doesn’t show up on banner.
Julia, what do you mean your banner accounts section? Are you referring to the banner portion of the myWM site or something else?
Hello,
I am wondering that if I did worse on the TOEFL test at the second time. Will that hurt my application?(assuming all TOEFL scores were sent to W&M) or will the admission only look at my highest score regardless how bad I did later(the second time)?
We will review your best composite TOEFL score.
