Decisions, Decisions — 2014 Regular Decision Edition
We Admit It! The time has come. Decision emails are being sent at this very moment. The long wait is finally over. Below is all of the information you need to know regarding how we release decisions. Additionally, we put out three additional blogs; one for each type of decision (accept, waitlist and deny). We ask that you read your decision email and the blogs carefully as they should answer most questions you might have.
How Decisions Are Released
- All students who applied Regular Decision who had a completed application and all Early Decision deferred students will receive their decision via email, regardless of decision.
- Emails are sent to the email address you provided in your Common Application.
- Decisions are emailed to the student only. Parents will not receive a copy.
- We are in the process of queuing up and sending over 13,000 individual emails. This takes several hours. We cannot predict exactly when your email will land in your inbox. Please be patient as this process plays out.
- The sender of the email will be “College of William & Mary.”
- The subject will be “Good Things” Or “William & Mary Admission Decision.”
- Those admitted will also receive an admission package in the mail. Those who are waitlisted and denied will only receive an email.
What to Do if You Do Not Receive a Decision
- DO NOT PANIC. Not receiving an email does not imply anything about your decision.
- Please first check your spam and junk folders as some email clients may send our emails there.
- Contact our office during business hours via phone (757-221-4223) or email (admission@wm.edu). We will investigate further. We will follow up with you if there’s a reason we did not release a decision (maybe your application remains incomplete) or we will try to resend the email using a different email tool. All emails we resend get sent after 5:00pm each weekday evening. We will also send a hard copy of your decision via mail in case for whatever reason you cannot receive our email.
Students Who Applied to the Joint Degree Programme
- For the most part, decisions for both applications will come in the same email.
- If the email you get tonight does not mention your decision regarding the Joint Degree Programme, you will receive another email with that decision later this week (those who applied ED and to the Joint Degree Programme will receive a decision via email later this week for the Joint Degree Programme).
Regardless of the decision you receive, we appreciate the time and effort each of you put into your applications. All of you have accomplished so much and should be so proud of yourselves. Whether your college search ends in Williamsburg or elsewhere, we wish all of you the best as this process comes to a close.

Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
We are in the process of releasing decisions, which can take a while to complete in light of the high volume. No matter what news you receive, we truly wish you the best for next fall and were honored to review your application. Please review this blog, especially the entries specific to admit, waitlist and deny decisions, for answers to any immediate questions you have.
We’re going to sign off for the night but will return tomorrow to respond to comments.
I was deferred from ED to RD, but haven’t gotten an e-mail. Anyone else in the same boat?
Congrats to everyone who got in!!
Now I’m even more hyped to hear about the transfers…alas, I assume it’ll be another month. Oh well, I’m excited for the new freshman class!
Ahh just got the good news!! I had received a postcard a month or so ago but I’m so happy it is official now! Thanks for making this a great night! Go Tribe!
When can waitlisted students know exactly if they are getting accepted or not? Thank you!
@J, review the blog about the waitlist linked in this blog. It answers that question and provides other info about that process.
Hi there… I am neither a prospective student nor the parent of one (yet—soon!), but as an alumna (the 299th graduating class!), that this blog makes me proud! What a great service you to do our College and to prospective students/parents. Thank you! To all of those who will be the class of 2018, congrats! You could not find a better place to call home. Hark Upon the Gale!
@W&MAlum, thanks for the shout out. This blog will be here when your student is ready to look at colleges!
Hello! Thank for making this post. All of the information is great! I have a question regarding the Joint-Degree Program. My child applied ED to W&M and the Joint-Degree Program. She was accepted to W&M but has yet to receive the information as to if she was accepted or not to the Program. On the Class of 2018 Facebook group, she has seen that many students have received their acceptation/rejection letters that have applied Early Decision. We are wondering when she will receive her letter or email.
Again, thanks for this post! Great information 🙂
@Patiently Waiting, have your child follow up with our office on Monday. Joint Degree decisions have been released so we’ll need to investigate why your child didn’t receive one. Or if they did and somehow didn’t get it we can resend it.
Hi! I feel silly asking this question, as I know the date for Fall Transfer decisions isn’t until May 1st, but has that application review process began yet? Also, are the “likely postcards” applicable to transfers as well?
I’m so antsy about this decision and am really hoping to find a new campus that can be my home for the next three years. I’m truly praying that it can be William & Mary.
@Hopeful Transfer, yes review of transfer applications has begun but no there is no likely postcard process. Our review process is so much shorter so there’s not really time to send postcards.
Has anyone received their “thick envelope” (for admitted students) yet? We’re awaiting the financial aid info, too. It didn’t come today (Saturday); hope it will arrive soon!
@Alison, the thick envelopes were mailed Thursday so they’re on their way. Financial aid information is emailed usually about a week after letters are received.
@Hopeful Transfer good luck from one hopeful to another. Fingers crossed for the both of us!!
@HopefulTransfer It wasn’t until after I posted my commment that I realized someone else had the same alias! Hopefully “good things” come our way in about a month!
@HopefulTransfer It wasn’t until after I posted my comment that I realized we used the same alias! Hopefully “good things” come our way in about a month!
When do the Early Decision kids get to know whether or not they were accpeted into the St. Andrews Joint Degree Programme?
@Dan, St Andrews decisions for ED students were sent via email last week. If you haven’t received one, please call our office.
I’ve read other places that some transfers are notified of their acceptance early. Is this true, and if so, how much earlier? Thank you so much!
@2014 Transfer, there have been some years where we’ve sent an admission email to a select group of transfers who moved through our process a bit ahead of schedule. It’s usually just a matter of days before the general release.
Does William and Mary publish the percent of recent graduates who found work in their field of study?
@Prospective Student, our Cohen Career Center collects such information based on a survey they do of graduating seniors. You can contact them. Additionally, W&M has a LinkedIn page which provides a lot of info on what W&M grads are doing professionally (http://www.linkedin.com/edu/school?id=19598&trk=vsrp_universities_res_name&trkInfo=VSRPsearchId%3A1306651511396721994774%2CVSRPtargetId%3A19598%2CVSRPcmpt%3Aprimary)
When is release date for transfer decisions ? Also were the early emails sent out to the transfer students yet?
@Transfer Student, just like with freshmen, we don’t predict a release date in advance. It will be by May 1 at the latest. If we are able to send out early emails again they’re usually sent only about a week or so before we send the general release so that’s generally in late April. No transfer decisions have been released at this time.
What does it mean when I’ve been Waitlisted again as a transfer applicant? Who am I waiting to accept or decline: other junior transfer applicants or regular students?
@waitlistedagain, the transfer and freshman waitlists are separate. If we have room in our entering class, we will look only at students who applied as freshman and are on the waitlist. If we have room to admit additional transfers, we will look only at those who applied as transfers and who are on the waitlist. With the transfer waitlist, it’s not based on any specific class. If we have room, we’ll admit whomever is the most competitive regardless of academic year (sophomore, junior, etc.).
Has W&M started notifying students from the waiting list for the class of 2018 yet? Also, any idea how many spaces will be available?
@Mary, see our latest blog from last Friday. It provides a pretty comprehensive update.
