The Multicultural Experience at the College: A Different Perspective

So, my name is Chloe Lewis, I’m a sophomore here at the College. I’m a white bred kid from the Midwest with blonde hair and green eyes, but I bet you didn’t know that I can also speak Chinese. Coming to the college having studied Chinese for over four years, I knew that Chinese would be something I would want to pursue as either a major or a minor. When I came to the College for my first semester, I entered myself into the 200 level Chinese classes and got down to work. I had to keep on top of my game, right?

As the semester progressed I realized that something was definitely missing in my Chinese experience. I’m from Chicago, so coming from a big city I had been spoiled by the likes of a little spot called “China Town.” I started to miss the Chinese pop songs, candies, and dumplings I could get by just traveling a short distance on the El in the city. I longed for a pair of chopsticks and the chance to use them. For me, studying Chinese was not just about studying the language and the grammar it was also about living the culture. By attending the College of William and Mary my prayers were answered. The college has multiple different language houses that host different parties and events to teach the community and language students about the cultures of the regions students either live in or study about.

Much to my delight I traveled to the Chinese house last night to attend a dumpling making party. We made our own dough and stuffing. We steamed our own dumplings. We ate, ate, and then ate. The best part about it was the entire time we spoke Chinese, listened to music, and enjoyed the company of other students wanting to have the same experience I wanted. Having opportunities like this really just goes to show how a small school can fill every hole or space you need filled in—not only your life, but also your studies. I was able to combine my love for language with my love for culture and having a good time all into one night without even leaving Williamsburg. It was like my own little China town, so far from home.
