Living in a Colonial Town

I’m from Chicago, and while many people are familiar with the College, some are not. Oftentimes I get asked the
question, “Where is William & Mary?” When I respond “Williamsburg, Virginia (as in Colonial Williamsburg)” a look of enlightenment always appears on the face of whoever I’m speaking to. It’s as if the light bulb upstairs has been instantly switched on.

Many people wonder what it’s like to go to college in a colonial town. Well, let me fill you in on the perks.

1. You get to see people walking past you in colonial garb like it’s no big deal.
2. With your William & Mary ID, you get free admission into all the Colonial Williamsburg attractions.
3. Because Williamsburg is a tourist town, you get a myriad of delicious (albeit expensive) restaurants to quell your appetite.
4. And you get to experience the wonderful events that attract hundreds of tourist each year. My favorite is Grand Illumination, when fireworks are shot off from three locations in early December. The Colonial soldiers march with their fifes and drums before the light show begins.

Other benefits include picturesque backdrops (for all those photos you’ll be sending mom and dad) and quaint cobblestone streets which remind you of a time long ago. Whether you’re a history buff or not, Williamsburg is a great place to call home for four years. The rich history that the town has to offer only adds to the charm of the College. While it may seem odd at first to go to school in such a touristy location, I think it has been a great experience. It’s an incredibly safe area and the perfect places to sit, stroll, or study. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.
