Lauren Monark & Kyra Zemanick

Kyra Zemanick & Lauren MonarkLauren Monark is a senior history major in the NIAHD program at the College of William and Mary. A San Diego native, she has been riding horses for twelve years and was an avid competitor with her horse George during high school. In 2008 she participated in the National Institute of American History and Democracy’s pre-collegiate program in early American history, cementing her desire to attend the College. Now a collegiate, Lauren is a member of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, as well as the Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Fraternities. She is also the co-Philanthropy Chair for Phi Mu. A member of the Spotswood Society, she currently works as a proctor at the Wren Building and is ready to enjoy her final year of college!

Kyra Zemanick is a senior history and anthropology double major from Pittsburgh, PA. A James Monroe Scholar and a Dintersmith Honors Fellow, she has spent the past two summers analyzing firsthand testimony on the American Civil War and will be presenting her research at the Showcase of Summer Research and the Honors Colloquium. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the James Blair Historical Review, the president of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, the president of the Golden Key International Honour Society, and a tour guide of the Wren Building through the Spotswood Society. An avid writer, Kyra has published articles in the Flat Hat and the Saint (the University of St Andrews student newspaper). She is also an experienced violinist, with past orchestral memberships including the St Andrews Baroque Orchestra. In her spare time, she enjoys watching episodes of Top Gear (the UK version), drinking hot cocoa at local coffee shops, and photographing the beauty of Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary.

Katherine Hughes

Kate HughesKatherine Hughes is from Port Washington, New York and majored in English and minored in Art & Art History. She studied abroad in both Cork, Ireland, and Florence, Italy, and loved that she could call Colonial Williamsburg home as well. In her senior year she was the Vice President of the Botetourt Chamber Singers, as well as the Assistant Director of Reveille, a women’s a cappella group on campus. Kate performed with both Opera Workshop and Sinfonicron Light Opera Company beginning in her freshman year, and privately studied voice with Phaedra McNorton. She was a brother of Delta Omicron, the Music Honors Society, as well as a member of the Spotswood Society. As a James Monroe Scholar, she was in the midst of completing her project on book illustration and fairy tales, and presented at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the fall of her senior year. Kate loved the colonial architecture, historic gardens and candlelight that abound in CW, and in her free time, Kate could be found drinking copious amounts of tea while walking down DoG street – though she swears she believes firmly in the American Revolution.

Leah Towarnicky

Leah TowarnickyLeah Towarnicky is from Fairfax Station, Virginia and majored in Neuroscience and minored in Music. In her senior year, she was an avid researcher on Caenorhabditus elegans meiosis in the William and Mary Biology Department, the Business Manager of the women’s a cappella group Reveille and the Vocal Director of the student-run organization Sinfonicron Light Opera Company. In addition to studying opera privately and in the Opera Workshop class in the Music Department, she was a former member of the William and Mary Choir and the 2010-2011 Vice-President of the Botetourt Chamber Singers. As a Monroe Scholar and HHMI Freshman Scholarship recipient, she received the opportunity to present her summer research findings at the Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Summer Research Symposium. Leah spent her summers furthering her scientific and musical education everywhere from W&M to Cambridge, England, to Italy, Greece and Turkey. During her free time she loved to travel, explore new places and foods, read books in trees,and bike down the streets of Colonial Williamsburg.

Grace McGlade & Addie Alexander

Grace McGlade & Addie AlexanderGrace Elise McGlade was an American Studies major and Philosophy minor. She grew up in Colorado and lived abroad in London, England for several years with her family and enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures. She was a Sharpe scholar, group fitness instructor and ran the mental health branch of H.O.P.E. She loved residing in the colonial area!

Adelaide Wister Alexander was an American Studies major and Hispanic Studies minor from Charlottesville, Virginia. When she wasn’t watching horse-drawn carriages passing her window with a man in colonial garb at the reins, she facilitated a campus chapter of Virginia Organizing and working with TLSC on the Living Wage Campaign. She loves picnics, going for runs in Colonial Williamsburg and exploring the world with friends!

Joy Thomas

Joy ThomasJoy Thomas is from Falls Church, Virginia. A Neuroscience major, she decided to pursue a minor in French after spending a summer abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France. She served the W&M community through her involvements as Orientation Aide, student mentor, layout editor of jump! magazine and chemistry TA. She was also a member of the Student Environmental Action Coalition and her social sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, where she served as Philanthropy Chair. In her spare time, she volunteers at Head Start, bakes cupcakes and attempts to sail. She enjoyed long walks in CW and candlelit dinners at the taverns.

Katherine Goulde

Katherine GouldeKatherine Goulde is from Amherst, Virginia and majored in Economics and Mathematics. During her summers, Katherine conducted Economics research and also studied abroad with the William & Mary program in Prague. Aside from classes, Katherine was involved in a number of organizations and activities at the College. She was the president of Passing Notes a cappella group, an enthusiastic member of the Swing Dance Club, a Freshman Orientation Aide, a Monroe Scholar, an Economics Teaching Assistant and was also involved in various student theater groups including Mystic Theater and Shakespeare in the Dark. After graduating, she planned to attend graduate school for Economics. Katherine also loved hiking and canoeing out on Matoaka, as well as occasionally rancing down the streets of Colonial Williamsburg.

Monica Holt

Monica HoltMonica Holt is from McLean, Virginia, majored in English and pursued a minor from the Business School in Marketing. She served as Vice President of the school’s A Cappella Council, as well as held leadership roles in Reveille (W&M’s prestigious all female a cappella group), and The Christopher Wren Singers (W&M’s oldest a cappella group). She was the Vice President of Communications for Delta Gamma, in addition to her long-term involvement as an Orientation Aide, Student Mentor and Italian Teaching Assistant. Monica spent her summers furthering her studies of Italian and the theater everywhere from UVA to Cambridge University to Florence, Italy. During her winter vacations, Monica came back to campus as part of the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company. After graduation, Monica planned to pursue a career that incorporates her interest in public relations and advertising with her passion for the arts.

Erin Teigen

Erin TeigenErin Teigen is from Richmond, Virginia and majored in International Relations and English. She interned in the Public Affairs department of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. She served as Recruitment and Membership Chair of the Health Outreach Peer Educators, as well as an intern to the College’s Office of Health Education. She was a Student Advocate for Honor Council hearings and was a representative to the Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention. In addition to her involvement on the Inter-Sorority Council as a representative for the Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority, she was also a member of the Student Mentor Program. Following her graduation, Erin planned to pursue a career in international public relations and journalism.
