New Students SHOW Their Stuff
Today over 200 new William and Mary students completed 20 projects across Williamsburg, throughout James City County, into York County and east to Newport News. Over 1,000 hours of service were completed, community needs were met and just as importantly, if not of most importance, 200 students began their pathway of engagement at William and Mary.
William and Mary boasts remarkable hours committed to meeting community need. Hundreds of students tutor local children, the Bone Marrow Drive and the William and Mary chapter of APO are each the largest of their kind in the nation. Proportionately more students serve in the Peace Corps than any other and the President’s Commission on Service lists William and Mary in the top 3 percent of the most productive community service schools. The breadth of engagement is worthy of great interest if not intrigue. The depth of engagement is where the real story unfolds and it is where, I hope, for the Class of 2012 the journey takes hold. Today, at this event, while on the work site, talking with project leaders and reflecting personally these students considered on how they will begin to write the script of their engagement journey.
