Oh Stacy
Like many Dupont/Yates Natives, the CAF became a common dining destination for me during my freshman year at William and Mary. Thanks to its close proximity to my dorm, its pasta buffet, and its endless supply of chocolate milk – I was easily hooked. But something else grabbed my attention from the get go. Namely, Stacy – The Ice Cream Lady. Everyday after clearing my plate, I looked forward to heaping scoops of strawberry ice cream paired with Stacy’s warm smile and a friendly “How are you, today?”
But, as they tend to do, the years went by and suddenly I found myself lunching more commonly in the Sadler Center and Marketplace dining halls. I hadn’t seen Stacy in over a year. This summer, while interning with a company in Williamsburg, I happened to find myself riding the bus home, sitting next to Stacy. She remembered me by face, then by name, and was extremely interested in how my William and Mary tenure had progressed. We chatted for a few minutes, then went our separate ways, heading home. Getting off the bus, I couldn’t help but to consider William and Mary’s unique sense of community. Would this positive interaction have occurred in another college town? Maybe. I think the difference is that, at William and Mary, moments/interactions like these happen daily.
