What Are You Waiting For?
Admit It! You have a devil and an angel on your shoulder when it comes to completing college applications. The angel is offering every piece of encouragement to get them done and get them done early. The devil is all about procrastinating (he likes to live on the edge). Well for those of you more inclined to listen to the angel, the William & Mary application is awaiting. (Even if you’re more about living on the edge, the application will be there waiting for you…at least until the application deadline.)
W&M is an exclusive user of the Common Application (meaning that’s the only application we make available) which is available online. We also require a W&M Supplement to the Common Application (for both freshman and transfer applicants) which went live on the Common Application’s website on September 1. A complete list of application requirements for freshman and transfer applicants is available on our website. The entire application is available and ready for submission; all we need now is applicants.
So whether you choose to submit right away or wait ‘til the last minute, we eagerly await what you have to say.

Submitted mine through the Common App last night, Just waiting to hear back! Ugh…the wait!
@Jay Lacano, way to go! Yeah, now the waiting begins. We send all decisions out at the same time according to application deadline. All ED applicants will hear from us in early December, all regular decision applicants in early April.
Wrote the first draft of my supplement yesterday and had a lot of fun with it 🙂 I can’t wait to get my ED application in!
Working hard on the supplement, I cannot wait until I finally get to submit it! December never seemed so far away…
@Thaddeus, glad to hear it. December will be here before
you know it. And feel free to post any questions you have along
the way. We’re here to help.
I accidentally sent my September ACT scores–which were dreadful–and am wondering if it is really true that you will only look at our highest scores. Should I include an explanation about why I did so poorly? Of course, I will be submitting my higher scores but am kicking myself that I did this.
@Anon, as long as we receive your higher scores we will only see your highest composite.
wondering if it is better to send it all in early (not ED), to let a college know I am really interested, and get seen while admissions staff still fresh, or hold back and keep re-working (?overworking) essays….
@Jeanette, we do not note the date an application was turned in when reviewing it. In other words, we don’t think a student who submits today has any more interest than the student who submits the day before the deadline. You should only submit your application when you believe it’s ready.
I’m applying early decision this year and have been working for weeks on my common app and supplement essays to make sure they’re just right.
I went with a different style for my supplement- using my common app to exhibit more formal prose and my supplement to really let my personality and voice shine through. In doing this my supplement didn’t turn out in a traditional essay format. I’m using short quotations and then small paragraphs that give a fuller view of who I am.
I was told it might not be the best way to go about it and might reflect badly on me as it is not really an “essay” per se.
Would William and Mary prefer to see a certain style to the supplement essay?
@Monica, we’re completely fine with you taking stylistic risks. That’s what our Optional Submission is all about. See some of our other blogs on that part of the application specficially and you’ll see we’re all about students thinking outside hte proverbial box.
