Decisions, Decisions – Early Decision 2015 Edition
We Admit It! The time we have all been waiting for has arrived. Early Decision notifications have officially been finalized and launched, and are currently on their way to your inboxes (Transfers: please note that Spring Transfer notifications will be launched next week). Thank you to all of our applicants and their families for your patience as we have been carefully navigating our review process. It has been both rewarding and humbling to review our applicants’ many accomplishments. One of the best parts of our job is getting to learn so much about so many promising young adults. Whatever the outcome of your individual application, please know how much we appreciate you applying to William & Mary, and how confident we are that each and every one of you is destined for great things.
Below you will find all pertinent information about how decisions are released and what each decision means.
Decision Release:
- Decision emails were sent this evening (December 4) to the email address provided in your Common Application (only students receive a decision notification; parents do not).
- Though all emails have officially been launched, it will take some time for all emails to leave our server and reach your inbox.
- Decision emails are sent to all applicants regardless of decision (assuming you submitted a completed Early Decision application).
- Students, please check your spam/junk folders in case the email landed there instead of your inbox (this does sometimes happen).
- The sender of the email will be “College of William & Mary.” The subject will either be “Good Things!” or “William & Mary Application.”
- Those who are admitted will also receive a formal decision letter in the mail in the coming days. Those who are not admitted (either defer or deny) will only be receiving a decision email.
- Note: If you submitted a completed Early Decision application and did not receive a decision email from us this evening, please do not panic. There are a number of reasons why this could have happened. Please contact us on Monday. We will investigate what happened and report back to you. If need be, we can re-launch your decision email, as well as mail a hard copy to you.
- Second Note: As decisions are arriving to inboxes, we will be signing off until later this evening. Please review this blog in its entirety for answers to any immediate questions. We will respond to any other questions or comments later this evening and throughout the weekend.
Decisions
Admit: Admit It! You are jumping up and down, screaming at the top of your lungs and busting out a celebratory dance. Congratulations! “Good Things!” means exactly what you think it means: you are officially a member of the William & Mary Class of 2020! It is our absolute pleasure to welcome you to the Tribe. Your admission letter (signed personally by Dean Tim Wolfe) is on its way and will be arriving in the coming days. A more robust admission packet will also be sent to you in the spring once we have admitted the rest of your class through the regular decision application process. But keep doing that jig. Keep playing that song. Update your Facebook status, profile pic and cover photo (we’ve provided some options on the Welcome website linked in your decision email). Tweet using the #wm2020 hashtag. Join the Class of 2020 Facebook Group. Wear your favorite Tribe Gear to school on Monday. And most importantly, be proud of yourself. You’ve earned it. We promise we’re exceedingly proud to now call you members of our community. The welcome website will provide you with further details about submitting your enrollment deposit (due in two weeks) and other useful information. So start counting down the days until Move-In Day next August. We can’t wait to welcome you to campus. One Tribe. And now it’s yours.
*Note: If you also applied to the St Andrews William & Mary Joint Degree Programme, those decisions will not be made until the spring. We will send you another decision email specific for that programme when we send out Regular Decision notifications.
Defer: We are sorry that we are not able to admit you to W&M at this time. We know how badly you wanted a “Good Things” email this evening, and that you are understandably disappointed and upset with our decision. This decision is in no way a reflection of any wrongdoing or misstep on your part. You are a bright and accomplished individual, and we wish that we could admit every great student who applies to W&M (especially those who have identified W&M as their top choice). Unfortunately, given the small size of our entering freshman class, this is not the reality of our process. This small size, coupled with the strength of this year’s Early Decision applicant pool, forced us to make several difficult decisions.
As a deferred student, your application will automatically be reviewed again, in its entirety, during our Regular Decision review process in the spring. We will send you another decision notification in the spring (if you applied to our Joint Degree Programme you will also receive a decision email specific for that programme at that time). You are welcome to send us any new academic information (first-semester grades, updated standardized test scores) as well any high-level awards or significant accomplishments not included in your original application. You can also send us a letter/email/statement of continued interest. As part of this process, however, we also encourage you to look closely at other schools to which you decide to apply. As our applicant pool grows during Regular Decision, so too does the competition for spots in the freshman class. Explore what other schools have to offer and get excited about their fantastic opportunities. Doing so will set you up for the best possible college outcome, regardless of what your final W&M admission decision may be. We wish you the best of luck as you continue to navigate this process, and are of course always happy to provide any assistance that we can.
Deny: Nothing that we write here will make this decision any easier to swallow. You are likely feeling upset, sad, frustrated, confused, and perhaps a bit angry. All of these emotions are both natural and justified. You applied to William & Mary as your first choice college destination, and this decision is anything but ideal. Please know that while this is a final decision for your freshman application to W&M, this is NOT a judgment on either your record of accomplishment or college potential. Many of our applicants, like you, do so many things right, and as a result we have the difficult task of making many nuanced decisions among so many terrific students. We have full confidence that another school (and likely several) will offer you admission, and that you will do great things at whichever school is lucky enough to have you as a member of their freshman class. We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about you, and wish you all the best going forward.
Brad Harlan
Assistant Dean of Admission
Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
I’m so excited!!!!!!!! What do I use my student ID number for?
Hi there @Hi! Thank you for your comment and welcome to #wm2020. Your student ID number (what students affectionately call their 930 number) is your all access & encompassing identity number for W&M. We use it throughout the application process, and it then applies to your ID card for meal plans, purchases, class registration just to name a few things.
I’m so excited! What do I use my student ID number for?
Hi. I was wondering if we could receive any information regarding why we were not accepted to better prepare our application for other colleges?
@Sally, thank you for your comment! If you would like to email or call our office next week to speak with dean about your application decision, you are welcome to, and we would be happy to talk. Wishing you all the best in your future.
Deferred… to say the least I’m so disappointed. I thought I had a really good shot at getting in, I guess I was overconfident and am now seeing the consequences. I will work harder than I ever have to boost my standardized testing scores and keep my moral up, waiting another agonizing four months to find out if I will get into what I see as the best fit college for me and also dream school.
Katie,
Don’t give up hope! I’m a current WM freshman & I was originally deferred in Dec and waitlisted in March. Are you “out of state”? That category is very competitive ED but I know a bunch who were admitted in May.
@WmStudent, thank you for your words of encouragement to our prospective students like @Katie Hartraft. You are correct that a deferral at this point in time is not a final decision, and that it is indeed possible to still be admitted in the regular decision pool. As noted above, we feel that while this is absolutely true, it is also important for students to start assessing other potential colleges at this point in time. This approach will set you up for the best possible outcome in the spring, regardless of what final admission decision you receive from us.
@WmStudent Thank you, I am definitely not giving up hope! I am in-state, though
@Katie Hartraft, we understand your disappointment, and are sorry that we were not able to admit you at this time. Should you decide to re-take a standardized test, you are welcome to send us your updated scores. As noted above, you are also welcome to send us first semester grades, as well as a note, email, or letter of continued interest (outlining for us why W&M is still your top choice and why you best see yourself at our university). We wish you the best of luck as you continue to navigate your college search.
Should continued interest emails be sent to admission@wm.edu ? Thank you so much!
@Katie Hartraft you can either send your statement of continued interest to our general email address (admission@wm.edu), or to your specific regional dean (found here: http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/contactus/meetthecommittee/index.php).
If any of you who were deferred would like to talk to someone about it, please check out my comment on College Confidential. As a student who was in the same position only a year ago, I am more than happy to debrief with you. I understand what you’re going through better than most, and nothing would make me happier than to be able to help you process this. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19017800#Comment_19017800
@Kvanderz, thank you for offering to serve as a resource for our prospective students. We hope that you’re having a terrific freshman year.
It is absolutely my pleasure. I didn’t take my deferral last year very well, and I would have given anything to talk to someone who had lived through it. I’m enjoying talking with the kids who have contacted me; in a way, it’s helping me heal too.
If the email does not refer to the student being admitted or being deferred, does it mean that the student will not be able to apply again in the general admission pool?
@Concerned Parent, thank you for reaching out to us. We understand that this decision is not ideal and unfortunately, our deny decisions are final for this application cycle. It is not possible to apply again in Regular Decision. Please feel free to call or email our office if you would like to speak to us directly. We will be happy to discuss the decision and options moving forward with you.
THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!!! Thank you W&M Admissions Committee. I want to give each of you a big fat juicy kiss.
@Madeline, woohooo! Congratulations on this terrific accomplishment! We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August. Until then, have a terrific rest of your senior year, and Go Tribe!
Did anyone else get deferred? Does anyone else have any tips. I’m feeling really demoralized and depressed. My SAT was 1300 reading and math. Do you think that is the reason? How high would it need to be for this year’s admissions? My GPA is4.2 and I have a decent amount of honors and activities and athletics.
I was deferred and then denied last year, and while I certainly do not speak on behalf of the Admissions Committee, I did learn a few things from my experience. I’d like to help you any way I can. Feel free to PM me on College Confidential to talk. Username: kvanderz.
Tzal, I had similar stats ti you and I was deferred then later admitted. I know you’re probably really disappointed (as I was last Dec), but deferral is defiantly not a final denial!
@Tzal, it is natural to feel down and upset after receiving your deferral email. We are sorry that we were not able to offer you admission at this time. As part of our holistic process, we do not operate in terms of minimum SAT scores or GPA’s. This means that we are not able to provide you with an exact SAT or GPA that you would have needed in order to be admitted. All we can say is that the strength of this year’s Early Decision pool forced us to make several difficult decisions, simply because so many applicants, like yourself, presented such strong cases for admission. As noted above, you are welcome to provide our office with updated test scores, grades, and/or accomplishments/accolades, as well as send our office a statement of continued interest (further detailing why W&M is your top choice institution). Should you submit any of these materials, they will be included with your application file, and taken into account before making a final admission decision in the spring. We truly do wish you all the best as you continue to navigate your college search. Please feel free to contact our office if we can be of any further assistance.
So excited to be joining The Tribe! W&M 2020! I can’t believe it! Thank you so much! And for this blog for keeping me sane 🙂
@Emily welcome to the Tribe! Congratulations on this impressive accomplishment – you certainly earned it. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August! Until then, take care, and have a terrific rest of your senior year.
Congratulations! 🙂
I am so excited that I will be attending William & Mary next year! Thank you for this fantastic blog-it really is invaluable. Go Tribe!
@WM2020! Woohoo! Go Tribe! Welcome to the Class of 2020! We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August. Take some time to celebrate this weekend!
Congrats to everyone who applied ED! I did last year and I have to say that I can’t see myself going anywhere else! Welcome to the Tribe! You made a great choice.
@Jus thank you for your encouraging words to our newest members of the Class of 2020! Go Tribe!
I CAN’T WAIT TO GO TO WILLIAM AND MARY NEXT YEAR!!! So greatful to all of the admissions staff for all you have done for all of us 🙂 GO TRIBEEE!!!!
@GOTRIBE, as your username states, GO TRIBE!!! Congratulations on this terrific accomplishment. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August!
I recieved my Good Things email right before marching in my town’s Christmas parade just 2 hours ago!!!! Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity!! I’m beyond excited to finally say I am a member of the Tribe!!!
@Heather we are beyond excited to officially welcome you to the Class of 2020! We hope that you had a blast at your Christmas parade, and that you continue to take some time to celebrate this weekend. You’ve certainly earned it. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August! Go Tribe!
Will the ratio of males to females still be 40 to 60?
@Hi, the male to female ratio of last year’s class (Class of 2019) was 42% male and 58% female. The male to female ratio of the entire W&M student body is currently about 45% male and 55% female.
Words cannot explain how happy I was to receive the Good Things email. Thank you so much & I truly look forward to attending W&M next fall! Go Tribe!
@J we truly look forward to welcoming you to campus next fall. Congratulations on this terrific accomplishment! Go Tribe!
After checking this blog and my email every moment of the week, the email finally came in the one moment when I was distracted. Best surprise of my life! I’m so excited to be part of the class of 2020!!
The same thing happened to me, I didn’t even know the email had arrived for 30 minutes!
@Stu woohoo! Congratulations! We are so excited to have you as part of the Class of 2020, and look forward to welcoming you to campus in August. Until then, have a terrific rest of your senior year, and Go Tribe!
I am so excited to be attending next fall! I activated my account and created a password, but where do I now use that information to login? Also, should I wait to send in the deposit until the official letter comes? Thanks for all your hard work!
@Naomi, The Student ID username which usually includes your first 2 initials and your last name (separate from you ID number starting with 930) can be used to now create your W&M email address and to log into your student Banner account at my.wm.edu. Your Banner account houses all of your student records, emergency numbers, copies of tuition bills, employment payment portal (if you participate in a work study) and is where you will register for classes. Likewise, your email address (username)@email.wm.edu is what you will use during college and how we will contact you in the future. You can log in through WMAPPS or through Gmail. Just make sure if you log in through Gmail that you always include the @email.wm.edu part of the address. We hope this helps!
Thank you, I’m having trouble logging in to the Banner website. When I use my ID and the password I set, I get this message: “You are not authorized to use the Web Information Systems. Please contact the Student Records Office for more information.”
@Naomi, if you are still having difficulty with Banner we would recommend contacting our IT department at (757) 221-4357. They would be happy to walk you through any issues you may be experiencing.
Getting this deferral on my birthday has made it the worst birthday of my life so far. I feel very worthless.
Wish I was dead
Dear Disappointed.
This is a tough day for you. But you’re not alone.
If you’re having any feelings about possibly harming yourself, I encourage you to reach out to a friend, parent, counselor, teacher, clergy person, or someone else you trust. I don’t know where you live, but there are crisis hotlines all over the country.
One hotline that’s available 24/7 around the country is at 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-talk)
Please reach out to someone for help. You’re not alone. There are lots of people who would want to help you if they knew you needed help.
I’m sorry you had to get the news on your birthday, that is rather unfortunate…
Don’t look at this like the end of the road, view it as an opportunity to show the admissions committee what you’re really made of! But, as admissions has said, it would also be wise to start preparing other applications. There are lots of great schools out there calling your name, and W&M may still be one of them. Chin up!
I feel just the same as you. It is a tough day, but do not give up.
Deferral is not denial, so we still get chances.
I have to admit that I felt helpless since there’s nothing I can do to alter the decision, especially when others were taking the SAT exams again in this Nov. and Dec.
However, as it says, do not feel worthless. The better self is yet to come. There must exist some ways to change it.
@Disappointed, we are very sorry that the date of admission news this year coincided with your birthday. We agree with @ArlMom2 as well in saying to please reach out to those you trust for support. If you would also like to speak to anyone in our office as well, we are happy to help. While we had to make a very difficult decision here at W&M, please remember that a deferral means we will still review your application in full during regular decision and you are welcome to send additional material to your application. We have no doubt that you are capable of doing great things at whichever school you attend!
Don’t give up! I am sorry you got this bad news on your birthday, but deferral is not final denial. I was really disappointed too when I checked my email and knew I was deferred this morning. But we still have chance, so don’t be too disheartened. Happy Birthday btw!
@Disappointed, we want to echo the sentiments expressed by @ArlMom2, @Kvanderz, @Cindy and @Wendy. If you are having any thoughts about potentially harming yourself, please, please reach out to someone you trust and/or contact a professional hotline. Feeling upset and sad right now is normal, and as @ArlMom2 said, you are not alone. While we had to make several difficult decisions, including deferring wonderfully talented students like yourself, our admission committee has absolutely no doubt that you are capable of doing great things at whichever school you ultimately attend. Our admission committee genuinely looks forward to re-reviewing your application (as well as all of our deferred students’ applications) in the spring. Spend some time this weekend with family and friends, and remind yourself of how proud you should be of all that you have accomplished. This is not the end. This is just the beginning of an exciting and rewarding journey, whether you end up attending W&M or some other terrific institution. Our office wishes you a very, very happy birthday.
I am sooooo happy to be accepted! Today is the best day of my life. I am so excited to be the class of 2020!!! Thank you!! I’ve been wanting to go here since I was in 7th grade-so glad my dream came true 🙂
@Melissa we are so excited to welcome you to the class of 2020! Take some time to celebrate this weekend! We’ll see you for move-in day in August, if not before. Go Tribe!
I woke up at four AM South African time to take some pain medication as I had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday. It was such a wonderful surprise when I happened to check my phone and see that I’ve been accepted! I ran screaming to my mother, and eventually fell asleep again. Thank you so much to the entire admissions committee for so carefully reviewing each application, and keeping us all updated through the blog.
I don’t know if you can answer this, but how many international students applied Early decision? Just curious!
@Alex, congratulations on your acceptance to the Class of 2020! We hope that your mouth is healing up nicely 🙂 We are not able to provide you with specific admission statistics at this time, but suffice it to say that we had several exceedingly talented international students apply to W&M through the Early Decision deadline. You will have classmates from all around the globe and United States. We look forward to welcoming all of you to campus in August! Go Tribe!
#bestbirthdaypresentever Thanks for the all of the hard work and great blog. We appreciated the many helpful updates throughout the process. My son called from the deck of his swim meet to holler that he, like his dad, is a member of the tribe. and yes, it is his 18th birthday. As parents we couldn’t be prouder. Go Grant! Go Tribe. (Grant Barnsback 2020, Michael Barnsback 1983)
@Barnsback Family congratulations! We are THRILLED that Grant is going to be continuing your family’s impressive Tribe legacy. We couldn’t be prouder to have him as part of the Class of 2020. We hope that you all take some time to celebrate this weekend! #GoTribe #GoTeamBarnsback
I’m sure I feel like thousands of dads this morning, angry, confused but more proud of my daughter than ever. She’s handling her rejection far better than I am. I Understand that W&M has thousands of talented kids to choose from and they can’t take them all but that doesn’t make it any easier.
My daughter will go on and get excepted at another school and will do great things in her life. W&M’s loss will be someone else’s gain.
Good luck to the W&M class of 2020.
@Northshoredad1 your post is spot on. Your daughter is phenomenally talented, and will do terrific things at whichever school is lucky enough to have her as part of their freshman class. Kudos to both you and your daughter for handling this disappointing outcome so maturely and thoughtfully. We wish you all the best going forward, and again apologize for not being able to provide your family with better news. Take care, and have a very happy holiday season.
I know what you are going through, we were in your shoes one year ago. My son had wanted to go to William and Mary since 7th grade. His entire common app was based on what he thought William and Mary wanted. Just to let you know he just finished his first semester at a GREAT college and I don’t think he can be any happier!! I am still somewhat bother of his denial but my son couldn’t be happier!!!
@Kest we are sorry that we were not able to offer your family better news last admission cycle, but are tremendously happy (and not at all surprised) that your son is having a great freshman year. We wish your son, and your entire family, nothing but the best going forward. Take care, and happy holidays.
I have a WM freshman, and a deferred sibling in my hands, nice huh 😀 🙁 I suggested to my deferred senior that sometimes people do end up on the wrong row of the spreadsheet sort but that is not because they did something wrong… and sent this Economist article. Surprisingly, the article provided more comfort to my senior than I thought it would. W&M is a good school – Best of luck to the class of 2020!
http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2015/10/value-university?fsrc=scn/fb/te/pe/ed/ourfirstevercollegerankings
@Bittersweet W&M Parent we are sorry that we were not able to provide your current senior with better news. Please know that your senior is welcome to provide our office with updated grades, test scores, and/or accomplishments/accolades, as well as a statement of continued interest expressing why W&M is their top choice institution. Should your senior elect to send any of those materials to our office, they will be utilized while re-reviewing their application in the spring. We hope that your WM freshman has terrific end to their first semester, and wish your current senior all the best as they continue to navigate their college search. Please let us know if our office can be of any further assistance. Take care, and happy holidays.
Patrick received his email just before he stepped onto the ice for his first Potomac School hockey game. It must have been serendipity to reach his goal of getting into William & Mary and suiting up for his first hockey game happen on the same day. He is thrilled, as are we, to be continuing the Tribe tradition with Patrick’s acceptance to the Class of 2020.
To all of you in the Office of Admissions, thank you. Thank you for being so clear and respecting everyone’s “roles” in this process, for providing such thoughtful, and humorous, insights, and, hey, I’ll say it, for accepting our son.
While this first phase for you is done, we know you have a lot more work to do. Good luck through the rest of the admissions season!
All the best, Nelia and Erik (W&M ’88) Gustafson
@Nelia Gustafson thank you for your kind note, and congratulations to your entire family on Patrick’s terrific accomplishment. We are thrilled to have him as a member of the Class of 2020, and can’t wait to welcome your family to campus for move-in day in August. Happy Holidays, and Go Tribe!
I understand that Transfer decisions will be live next week…early in the week or later? It’s been very challenging to be patient and wait for this decision. Thank you to the admissions committee for all of your hard work!
@Sasha, we are not able to provide specifics at this time, but will launch transfer decisions as soon as we are able. We appreciate your patience as we finalize things on our end!
Are you going to post any data on how many ED applicants you had, etc.?
@LHL we will be posting updated information on the Class of 2020 later this spring. To get a sense for what this looked like last year, you are welcome to look at last year’s admission statistics: http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/facts-figures/admission-stats/index.php
I am so happy to officially be part of the William and Mary class of 2020! Thank you for much!
Just a question. I tried to deposit my initial dues to William and Mary online, and it said that I could not access the information? Am I doing something wrong?
@Claire, the company that W&M uses as a deposit platform is experiencing some technical difficulties this weekend. If you have not been able to submit a deposit, do not worry! We are currently working to fix the issue and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and your families. We recommend waiting to submit your deposit later this week. Thank you!
Are acceptances conditional or are they final?
@2020 acceptances are “final” in the sense that you have officially been offered a place in the Class of 2020. This being said, admission offers are contingent on continued high standards of academic performance and personal conduct. As such, we will be checking in with students in the spring/summer to make sure they have continued to excel both in and out of the classroom.
Pretty startled by the email my child shared with me last night, yet refrained from sounding off immediately. From this parent’s stand point, this is William and Mary’s loss. However, flat-out denial from the perspective of the ED student college is harsh, to say the least. While I understand the frustration of the deferred (at least there is still a chance) and the elation of the accepted ( obvious), not too much has been said of the straight out denied- and that is quite a shame!
@WhataShame as we mention in our above post, it was a pleasure reading and learning about all of our applicants, regardless of whether they were ultimately accepted, deferred, or denied. We wish we were able to admit all of the phenomenal students that decide to apply to W&M, especially those who have identified W&M as their top choice institution. Unfortunately, given the small size of our freshman class and the large number of qualified applications we receive, we are simply not able to do this. We are being genuine when we say that we wish your student all the best going forward, and, like you, are confident that your student will accomplish tremendous things both in college and beyond. We wish you a very happy holiday season.
My daughter was deferred but she’s handling it okay. I really hope she can get accepted in the spring! W&M is her dream school! And just a question. I wonder how many applicants were admitted, deferred, and denied in ED admission.
@KMom we are not able to provide specific Early Decision admission statistics at this time, though you are welcome to look at last year’s statistics (http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/facts-figures/admission-stats/index.php). We look forward to reviewing your daughter’s application again in the spring, and are sorry that we were not able to offer your daughter admission at this time. We wish you a very happy holiday season.
hi! I was just admitted to W&M 2020 and I’m so excited! I was just wondering ahat the percentage of out of state students is for the class of 2020 currently? I am from Florida and curious about how many other out of state students there are. Thank you 🙂
I’m from Colorado!
@Emily congratulations! We are so thrilled to have you as a member of the Class of 2020. We hope you took some time this weekend to celebrate this terrific accomplishment! In the Class of 2019, roughly 64% of students are Virginia residents while 36% of students are non-Virginia residents. We anticipate these percentages being about the same for the Class of 2020.
I am on cloud nine right now because of my acceptance!! I keep checking it thinking that it’s a joke or I’m dreaming! I just can’t believe it!
So thrilled to be a part of W&M 2020!
@SQ woohoo! Congratulations! We are ecstatic to have you as a member of the Class of 2020. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August! Until then, have a terrific rest of your senior year, and Go Tribe!
Still haven’t received anything…Worrying…
Did you receive an email to verify when your application was completed? Make sure to check “all mail” and “junk mail” under the email account you used on common app. Hope you find it! Otherwise I would call admissions first thing tomorrow.
Yes, I received the “Your William and Mary Application is Now Complete” email on Nov. 11, and from that email I got the link of this blog…And I checked all the mails in my email. Thanks for your help! I will write to the admission office on Monday morning.
@JN, Thank you for letting us know that you have not received an email. Our office has the capability of resending the entire email to you on Monday morning to ensure that you receive your decision. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
My daughter received the exiting acceptance news two days ago. Her mother and I are so proud of her. W&M has been her goal from a very early age when we visited Colonial Williamsburg over Thanksgiving in 2005 to escape the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. It was then (age 7) that my daughter fell in love with W&M and she never wavered. Hurricane Katrina, to date, the greatest natural disaster to occur in the U.S. We lost my office, many clients, and sustained substantial damage to our home. It was a sustained season of heartache and grief. Yet, without that disaster, we would never have traveled to Williamsburg that Thanksgiving, and, therefore, probably would not have thought to considered W&M. My heart breaks for those students and families who did not receive the news for which they so longed. But, I can say, without doubt, that this is but a path you are walking to get to an ultimate destination. The denials and deferments are important bits of information which will guide you to something wonderful. Likely, that something will cause you to look back on this disappointment and say,” it all makes sense”. Like me and Hurricane Katrina.
@Ben thank you for your note, and congratulations to you and your family on your daughter’s impressive accomplishment. We are so genuinely thrilled to have your daughter as a member of the Class of 2020, and are happy to hear that your family has persevered through the treachery that was Hurricane Katrina. We share your disappointment that several talented students were presented with less exciting admission notifications this weekend, but are just as confident that these same students will go on to do great things during their undergraduate careers. We wish your family a very happy holiday season, and look forward to welcoming you back to campus in August for move-in day, if not before. Go Tribe!
I am so beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to attend William and Mary!!!!!! Quick question, is the enrollment deposit due 2 weeks from our acceptance email or the acceptance letter that we’ll get in the mail? Thanks!! Xo
@Thrilled congratulations, and welcome to the Class of 2020! The enrollment deposit is due within 2 weeks of receiving your acceptance letter.
Nice
Two weeks from the acceptance pavkage you will receive. Congrats! My son is attending also!
Thank you William and Mary for receiving the best email of our lives! We toured several Virginia colleges this summer. When we left W&M, my son said he was done looking, as this was his dream school. My junior daughter said the same!
I am thrilled to be a Tribe mom and just know that my son will do great things because of this. Here’s to hoping and praying for another acceptance letter next year. Having two there would be an honor!
Thank you again W&M for giving my baby a chance to live his dream!!

@Heather thank you for your note, and CONGRATULATIONS to you and your family on your son’s terrific accomplishment! We are so excited to officially welcome him to the Class of 2020, and look forward to reviewing your daughter’s application next year. #wm2020 #GoTribe
I don’t mean to harass you guys since I know you’re hard at work, but are there any updates for transfers concerning the decision release?
@AnxiousTransfer we plan to release transfer admission decisions by early this week. Stay tuned. You will be hearing from us soon.
Thanks! You all have been so helpful. It makes the waiting period a bit more bearable.
Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity for my daughter. She is so excited to become part of tribe!
@Linda W congratulations to you and your entire family on your daughter’s impressive accomplishment! We are thrilled to have her as a member of the Class of 2020. Go Tribe!
I have not gotten my letter in the mail yet, is that a bad sign?
@2020 this is not a bad sign, don’t worry. Admitted students should be receiving their letter in the mail by the end of this week. If you still have not received your letter by Monday, please give us a call at (757) 221-4223 and we’ll be happy to resolve this issue for you.
What circumstances do you unadmit students under? I have straight A’s (through high school and this semester) but might make a C in a single class.
@Worried 2020 offers of admission are contingent on continued high standards of academic performance and personal conduct. Should you end up with a C this semester, we simply ask that you take some time to reflect on this uncharacteristic outcome and the measures you may take for next semester so that such a decline does not become an ongoing trend. We request end-of-year transcripts from all of our matriculated students so that we can be sure high standards have been maintained throughout their senior year. In short, if you get 1 C, do not overly stress, but do make sure that you are still working hard in the spring in order to maintain the same level of academic performance that earned you admission to W&M.
Hello, My daughter is thrilled to be accepted, but we haven’t received the letter in the mail. Does it include any financial aid estimate, if we submitted the CSS Profile at the same time as the application?
I found this in an old blog, so I think it answers my question:
….Well, as far as need-based financial aid goes, any student admitted ED will be able to get an estimated financial aid package in December if they submit their CSS Profile to W&M’s Financial Aid Office. Then, in the spring (usually in March), they will receive a final package once they are able to submit the FAFSA. Those considering applying ED, can review W&M’s cost of attendance and use the net-price calculator to get an idea of what it will cost to attend W&M, and what if any financial aid they may be eligible for…
@Mom of Accepted Student, congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance to William & Mary! We are thrilled to welcome her as a member of the Class of 2020. Her acceptance letter should be arriving in the mail in the very near future. If you still have not received a letter by early next week, please let us know. As for your financial aid question, students who submit their CSS profile by the December deadline should receive a financial aid estimate by the holiday break. Then in the spring, after submitting the FAFSA, these same students will receive their official W&M financial aid package. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance. Take care, happy holidays, and Go Tribe.
My brother suggested I might like this website. He was entirely right. This post actually made my day. You can not imagine just how much time I had spent for this info! Thanks!
