Admit It! Gets Personal
I Admit It! This is probably the first time this blog has begun with a personal instead of a plural pronoun (something faithful readers likely noticed immediately). And those personal pronouns are intentional. Yes, I am the primary author of the Admit It! Blog but this blog is always written on behalf of the entire W&M admission staff. It represents a team, not an individual. This particular post is the one exception to that rule.
The Admission team is hard at work crafting the class of 2018. I personally am also hard at work on a potential member of the W&M Class of 2036. I will soon go on maternity leave to take care of my first child. As a result, the Admit It! Blog will take a hiatus of sorts. The blog will not be updated weekly as per usual. However, major moments will be blogged about (Completion of application processing, Overheard in Committee for both freshmen and transfers, decision releases for freshmen and transfers) and comments will be responded to – maybe not with this typical speediness but they will be responded to.
Please remember there are many other resources to get your questions answered: our Facebook page, our Twitter account, our website, or general email address (admission@wm.edu) and we’re of course also available by phone during business hours. Plus the Admit It! Blog has over five years’ worth of blogs about every aspect of our process. You can search our blog by month (so for example you can review blogs from this time last year to get a sense of our process during the spring) or by search term as many of our blogs are tagged – just be sure to use our Admit It! Blog title when you search (for example “admit it! + committee” or “admit it! + application review”. Finally, you can input a URL to search tags (http://wmblogs.wm.edu/tag/application will search all posts that have the “application” tag). Some that might be the most helpful:
- http://wmblogs.wm.edu/tag/processing

While Admit It! may be slightly out of sight in the coming months, it will not be out of mind (ours or hopefully yours). The admission cycle stops for no one, admission deans/bloggers included. We’ll see you a bit further up the proverbial road.

Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
Best of luck with your new addition! As any parent who follows your blog will attest: don’t blink!
Before you know it you will be in our shoes, wondering where the previous 18 years went. Savor every moment.
@Jean, many thanks. I do find myself wondering how the blog will progress now that I can see myself as the parent of a prospective applicant and not just an admission officer. Stay tuned!
How exciting and congratulations. I agree with Jean, it goes by so fast, especially the first year. Enjoy every precious moment!
@Rhonda, thanks!
Hold onto your little one tightly. As has been said, we are letting ours fly soon–mine has already been accepted as a member of 2018, and I hug him every chance I get. Congratulations!
@Joey, thanks and congrats to your student! We’re crossing our fingers for our daughter and the W&M Class of 2036!
Our daughter, Annie Martinez, is a senior at W&M. I feel certain that without you doing what you do…she would not have had the amazing gift she has enjoyed there for 4 incredible gifts. Gratitude is not a word sufficient to convey what we feel for you and the impact you have made on her life….and through these 4 years…all of our lives. 4 years have flown by – but they have been so full and rich – they seem like a lifetime – thanks to W&M and the good people there! May God bless you always – you will never know the good you have done and the lives you have impacted in profound ways!
Congratulations Wendy! Enjoy the time off with your precious new bundle of joy! As a parent of one of the newest members of the tribe (ED), I can’t thank you enough for this blog; it was a real lifesaver in the weeks leading up to decisions. From our family to yours, we wish you all the best. Time goes by in the blink of an eye, so savor every minute.
@Wendy, many thanks for the well wishes and congratulations to your student on their admission during ED!
I have a quick question–I know colleges ask applicants not to send a ton of letters of recommendations. However, I am a homeschooled student and I sent in several additional letters to show the committee my participation as a homeschooler in volunteer, extracurricular, and academic areas. Will I be penalized?
@Addy, you won’t be penalized but we cannot commit to reading upwards of 4, 5, etc. letters of recommendation for one student. Since we require only one and recommend no more than 2 additional letters we will gladly read 3 letters per applicant but may not ready more if an excessive number were sent in. It’s not that we don’t want to learn about each student but we also need to be able to complete reviews in a timely manner.
Hello, I just received a letter for the alumni committee (W&M is my dad’s alma mater) saying they recognize that I am a legacy and “hope to admit me also.” Is this just a formality, or is it an indication that I will be admitted. Thank you!
@Jean, our Alumni Society sends that acknowledgement to legacy applicants. It is not the same as a likely postcard. Of course, both the Admission Office and Alumni Society seek to maintain legacy connections, but unfortunately not all legacy applicants are admitted.
Best of everything on your new W&M “product” imagine how smart he or she will be having gone to college with Mom these past few months. Wondering if you are on track for another applicant record?
@Angela, we should have a press release on this year’s applicant pool in the coming weeks
