Modest but fundamental improvements make a bigger difference than high-end refinements.
Example 1: Low-cost tools for classrooms with limited or no technology would do more to empower teachers than smarter smart classrooms.
Example 2: Small upgrades to gas guzzlers would reduce pollution more than better hybrids.
In the context of making oneself competitive for admission, taking the time to gain a better foundation in the academic areas where one struggles likely will improve an overall record more than overachieving in an area of strength. Hold off on specializing until graduate school.
