Early Decision Deadline Just 3 Weeks Away
We Admit It! We’re still getting used to the idea that it’s already October. It feels like just last week we were enjoying the summer sun and spending much anticipated time at the beach. But, alas, the leaves are changing color, the weather is getting cooler, and our admission deans are regularly discussing who to play and bench on their fantasy football teams. This of course can mean only one thing—it is now officially fall, and the admission cycle for the Class of 2020 is in full swing.
As I’m sitting here writing this, members of our staff are currently out and about visiting high schools and attending college fairs in order to help students and their families as they continue down this exciting road known as the college search.
Some of you reading this may have already decided that William & Mary is the school for you, and that you, without question, bleed green and gold. If this describes you, then you may wish to explore our Early Decision deadline. Early Decision is the binding variety of an early application, which grants you the opportunity to both express your William & Mary fandom, and receive an early admission decision from our office.
Our Early Decision deadline is November 1st (only 3 weeks from this Sunday!), and admission decisions are issued by early December. As this deadline inches closer and closer, and questions inevitably arise, feel free to call us (757-221-4223), email us (admission@wm.edu), contact your regional dean or post a comment to this blog. We are happy to help if we can.
To those getting ready to apply Early Decision, give yourself a pat on the back. We look forward to reviewing your application, and to learning more about your many impressive accomplishments.
Brad Harlan
Assistant Dean of Admission
Comments are closed on posts older than one year, but we still want to hear from you. If you have a comment or question for us, please email admission@wm.edu.
I know that this information often isn’t available until December, but do you anticipate having any freshman Spring transfer spots this year? Do you have a waitlist for Freshman Spring transfers in case spots open up later?
Tribe Transfer, we do have the option of applying to be a Spring Transfer this year. In order to apply (through the common application) to be a spring transfer – you must apply by Nov 1 and you will be receiving a decision in early December. Remember, midterm grades are due Nov 22 to add to the application. If you are in your 1st year of college now, you must also submit SAT/ACT scores.
Thank you! Is it best for me to wait to turn in the mid-term report, or is it okay for me to send it now?
Tribe Transfer, you can turn in the mid-term report now, however we prefer that you wait until closer to the Nov 22 deadline to turn this in. That way the report will contain your most up-to-date academic information.
Hello – I have two questions regarding Early Decision. Will you consider scores from the October 24 ACT that will not be available until after the application deadline? Also, for applicants whose schools are on trimesters, will you consider 1st trimester grades if the school delivers the transcript to you before Thanksgiving? Thank you!
Mary, thank you for your questions! Overall, students are welcome to send in transcripts and scores after the deadline; we will add those to your file. I do want to let you know that the very end of the month will be cutting it close. We will have made many decisions at that point as our committee does plan to be making our final decisions before the Thanksgiving holidays in order to send out decision emails to students at the beginning of December. If you feel that your first trimester and ACT grades will make a huge impact on you level of competitiveness, you can consider waiting until regular decision where you will definitely be able to share those with us. Also, remember that an application will not be complete until we have testing scores, so make sure you send in older SAT/ACT scores to complete your app. Then, if sent RUSH, we can add your October ACT scores as well. I hope this helps!
Hello! I have a quick question – I’ve submitted my Common App early decision, and received a confirmation email from Common App stating that my application had been sent out, but I did not recieve a confirmation email from W&M. Should I simply be patient or should I follow up with W&M to make sure my application was received?
@Renata. Way to go submitting your application! We look forward to reviewing your application and to learning more about you. Our Operations Staff is currently processing the various applications that we have received. You should be receiving a confirmation email from us by early next week (Monday or Tuesday). If you have not received an email from us by Wednesday, feel free to give our office a call at (757) 221-4223 and we will be sure to check on the status of your application for you.
Hello! I was wondering if you all will be doing a “Decisions, Decisions” blog post this year and/or an “Overheard in Committee” series.
Thanks so much!
@Julia, thank you for checking in about these upcoming blog posts! Yes, we will indeed be posting both “Decisions, Decisions” and “Overheard in Committee” posts. Be on the lookout for these starting next week!
Hi! I am applying regular decision and wanted to know the last testing date for ACT and SAT that you will accept. Thank you so much!
@Brittany, great question. The last ACT date that we would recommend taking in order to ensure that your scores arrive in time to be considered is December 12. While you could potentially take the February 6 exam, we would not be able to guarantee that these scores would be seen prior to your application being reviewed. For the SAT , the last testing date you could take in order for your scores to arrive in time is January 23. If you elect to take any of these above tests, we would encourage you to list the test that you are taking in the testing section of your Common Application. Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns! Best of luck on whatever test you decide to take.
