Kindness in Action

Last Friday afternoon, 150 people gathered in New Town for the kick-off event to celebrate a new Williamsburg community initiative: #WMBGkind. It’s much more than a hashtag; it’s a way for people in our area to recognize, elevate, and foster kindness in daily life. This got me thinking about how kindness – and compassion – have power. Feeling those things is one level; acting on them, person to person, is another.

And, because active citizens work with others to create positive change, I would say that kindness and compassion are most powerful when they are embedded in how we are a community. When these values are placed at the forefront of our decision-making and action at every level, from our groups of friends to the policies and systems we create, kindness and compassion can radically influence lives, communities, and beyond.
