Today is the last day of Liquid Nitrogen Week

This has been liquid nitrogen week for me. On Tuesday, I went to the dermatologist, who used an aerosol can of the cold stuff to freeze a pre-cancerous spot on my forehead. I wore the band-aid at Governor Kaine’s Wednesday tour of the Integrated Science Center, which featured ice cream made instantly by pouring liquid nitrogen into the ice cream mix and stirring briskly.

On Thursday night, I was flipping channels when commercials interrupted the Olympics and the back-to-back baton drops of the men’s and women’s relay teams. I watched about a minute of Iron Chef America and soon learned that the secret ingredient was melon. I guess it was inevitable that during the few moments I was watching the Food Network, a sous chef would uncork a dewar of liquid nitrogen and pour it on top of some melon pieces.

Today is Friday and I have encountered no liquid nitrogen. But the day isn’t over yet.
