Snow?? In Williamsburg?

“I can’t imagine us getting more than an inch” I told my friend Friday night as we walked into the campus screening of Where the Wild Things Are (I did not understand that movie, by the way).  Late Friday night, however, as I heard excited voices running down the hall, I knew my prediction was wrong.  Pulling back the curtains Saturday morning, a few inches of snow already covered the ground and the small snowflakes blowing into my window foretold an even greater accumulation.

I spent five years living on the peninsula of Washington state, so I’ll admit that snow is no longer as exciting to me, particularly as it is being blown into my face on my walk to the Sadler Center for brunch.  For many of my friends, however, Saturday’s snow storm (which left at least four inches on our little campus) was a cause for celebration.  They ventured into Colonial Williamsburg for coffee and slices of hot pie, and others joined in giant snow ball fights on our Sunken Gardens.  I spent most of Saturday, however, avoiding the gusty flakes and later having a game night in my friends’ warm apartment.

I don’t want you to get the wrong impression though.  I do love snow! I just love it more once it’s already the ground.  That’s why Sunday was amazing. It was a beautiful bright day and the fluffy inches of snow were waiting for me.  I pulled on my fur lined boots and walked around campus (I call those boots my winter warrior princess boots, and I love feeling like they give me magical snow walking skills– I haven’t fallen yet).  One of my professors complained that by the time she arrived on Monday, the beauty of the snow had been destroyed by all of us students tromping over it.  While I too love the look of a clean blanket of snow, I actually really enjoy snow that’s been tromped on. It’s as if there is suddenly a map of where people have gone laid out right in front of you.  I see snow angels and snow sculptures and I know that students had fun making them.

For most students, the snow is starting to lose its luster as they slide their way to class, but I’m still rocking the winter boots and enjoying the snow in Williamsburg.
