5th Best Undergraduate Teaching – In the Country

The U.S. News and World Report just released rankings on where to find the best undergraduate teaching out of all the major national universities in the United States.

According to the rankings, William and Mary has the 5th Best Undergraduate Teaching out of all schools, public or private, in the United States.

Here’s what this means: If you’re looking to go somewhere and actually learn, grow, and be challenged, you can’t find anywhere better than William and Mary. One of the reasons I came to William and Mary is that the College has a reputation of being one of the oldest, most respected academic powerhouses in the nation. But beyond being easily ranked as one of the top universities in the United States, I knew that I would spend the best four years of my life at the College as an undergraduate. Therefore, while the prestige of graduate programs and how they contribute to the overall life of any college or university was important to me, I was primarily concerned with how much I would be concentrated on as an undergraduate. Sure, William and Mary has the 8th best faculty of any school in the country (2010 Princeton Review rankings) — but would I actually get to meet them and would they know who I was? The answer, I found, was a resounding yes.

The faculty at William and Mary have become not only the best teachers I have ever had, but also my friends. I know their families, their hobbies, and their interests, and they know mine. I respect them as scholars, researchers, teachers, people, and as friends. That’s something you can’t say at almost any other school in the country.

If you’re deciding between William and Mary and other schools, consider this. Almost no other school in the country can claim to offer the kind of undergraduate education that William and Mary does. Even as a freshman, you will have personal relationships with the most academically distinguished faculty in the nation. They will know your name, invite you to dinner, and care about you deeply, both in and out of the classroom.

William and Mary is a family, and more than that, it’s my family and my home.

It just happens to be one of the smartest families in the country, in one of the most beautiful and historic homes in the world.

Consider making it yours.

Go Tribe,

Brian
