A Cappella Mania!:

Ok, so I might get a lot of teasing from the rest of the interns for my participation in an a cappella group on campus, but deep down I know they all love a cappella music. It is a regular occurrance for all us down in the basement of the admissions office to play some pump up music in the morning before interviews begin. Today was no exception, however the music genre was a new one for us. Courtesy of my itunes library we rocked out to some good ol’ a cappella harmonies. Now I realize that I am biased because I am a member of a co-ed a cappella group on campus, but I really believe that this type of music shows a lot of musical skill and is tons of fun to listen to! I mean, come on, we sing songs with no instrumental help!!

A Cappella seems to be a bit of a phenomenon on college campuses. It thrives in this higher education environments yet

Cleftos

Cleftos

outside of the four-year experience it looses all of its “cool factor”. But certainly on the campuses themselves this music style has a wide fan base. William and Mary has eleven diverse groups: some all female, some all male, a few co-ed, and a couple that are religiously based. I sing in a co-ed group called the Cleftomaniacs, but we just call ourselves the Cleftos. Our group is one of the newests ones but we have quickly gained recognition on our campus and in the Williamsburg area. We are based in classic rock but have a large repertoire of music ranging from oldies to very modern popular music. We practice twice a week, two hours each time and typically perform at least a couple times a month. If you can’t tell by how much I like to talk about it, this is by far my favorite thing I am involved in at William and Mary!! It has been an amazing way to meet people and become an active member of this campus community. We hold tryouts every fall and often times in the spring as well!
