On-Campus Fun by Night

As new students to the College many of you may be wondering what sort of night activities are available in the area and on campus. The purpose of this entry is to point you toward an excellent outlet for on-campus fun: Alma Mater Productions (AMP). Briefly, AMP is a student organization that programs events on campus, bringing everything from comedians, musicians, to movies; and hosts trivia nights, Homebrews and Comedybrews (which are student concerts and stand up acts, respectively).

I was inspired to write this blog for you guys after attending one of AMP’s most recent events–comedian, actor, writer and rapper Donald Glover’s stand up show. If you haven’t already seen him on NBC’s sitcom “Community,” or heard his music under monikers “mcDJ” or “Childish Gambino,” I suggest you check them out! The man is talented, to say the least, and it shone through during his time with us. The night was not only filled with laughter at his jokes and stories, but also spontaneity as he took requests from the audience which lead to a free-style rap while a student beat-boxed for him, confessions of embarrassing stories, hugs from students, and a backflip while the entire room cheered him on.

Here’s a lineup of people and events AMP has in store for the coming weeks, just to give you guys an idea of what they can do!… Bill Nye the Science Guy, Super Mash Bros, PostSecret’s Frank Warren, laser tag, a trip to Jamestown Beach, and screenings of various movies outdoors on giant inflatable screens. Quite the nice variety, as you can see. Be sure to check out AMP events once you’ve joined us in the fall!
