Island of Misfit Toys

“We’re on the island of misfit toys!”  How does this line from one of my favorite Christmas movies relate to W&M?

Well, as you may have heard, we have a reputation for being a little nerdy.  Lest you think this is a negative, don’t worry. At W&M, we have mastered the art of geek chic.  Where else can you find someone who shares your undying devotion to the beautiful expression of friendship between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler?  My friends and I routinely discuss what we would do if we met one of them. Cry? Hug them and never let go? Follow them around? Beg to be adopted? The possibilities are endless.  Here, you will never have to worry about having a friend who is anticipating watching Lincoln as eagerly as you are.  And if you’re applying to W&M (or have been accepted), I know you’re already excited about experiencing that perfect communion when two souls with a shared passion for Texts from Hilary meet.  This passion for the weird, the arcane, and the downright strange, is one of my favorite features of the school.  There are absolutely people on campus who are genuinely really, really excited about dissecting a fetal pig—and I love them for it.  While that is definitely not my cup of tea, it is impossible not to be swept up in the student body’s infectious excitement about knowledge.  I am constantly inspired by the work ethic and breadth of interests in W&M’s student body. So whether you want discuss the NEJM or Jane Eyre in your spare time, you will find a kindred spirit here!
