Thaobrew

I went to an incredible concert last night at The Norva in Norfolk. The headliner was Rilo Kiley (who was fantastic), but I was most excited about one of the openers: THAO [with the Get Down Stay Down], who graduated from William & Mary in 2006.  According to On Tap Magazine, Thao’s music possesses “pitter-patter drums, casually spun vocals, and folksy mentality”.  I can’t get enough of it.

When I was still a naive freshman, Thao Nguyen was a senior that already had a huge fan base at the College. I first heard her perform at Homebrew, which is a concert series sponsored by thaoUCAB (University Centers Activities Board) that lets W&M students perform and showcase their talent for the student body. Performances are usually in Lodge One, our night-club type venue in the University Center (UC), or outside on the UC Terrace. Since there is a concert every other Thursday night, the Homebrew Committee within UCAB gets creative with titles for each one using a variety of puns. Some of my favorites include Gnomebrew, Homebro, and Stalonebrew.

Since graduating, Thao has come back to the College to perform in Homebrewaroo (Spring 2007) and open for the Ying Yang Twins (Spring 2008). It was absolutely amazing to see her perform at a venue like the Norva last night. The world is starting to really take notice of Thao. And when she blows up…I can’t wait to say that I went to college with her.

Check out Thao on iTunes! Her albums are Like the Linen and We Brave Bee Stings and All. thaomusic.com
