About Katie Adams

Hey ya’ll I’m Katie and I was a summer interviewer in the admission office when I was at the college. The best part of being in the ‘Burg in the summer was definitely interviewing and meeting all the rising seniors participating in the summer interview program!

Now for a glimpse into my life. I am from Salem, Virginia, a small town in southwest Virginia. Basically I brought the diversity of Virginia to campus, i.e. words like ya’ll and shootfire.

My story is a bit different than most at the college. I completed my undergraduate studies in three years, graduating with a degree in psychology and an elementary education teaching certification. During my fourth year I got my master of arts in education for special education. Basically, I spent my fourth year as a graduate student studying special education.

Before you read any further I am not a super genius. I came to William and Mary as a state student with dual enrollment credit which allowed me to graduate a year early. A one year graduate program at the college then let me spend my full four years here. Basically it’s the best of both worlds-finishing with three degrees and staying in Williamsburg for all four years!
Activities

Undergraduate Honor Council- as a member of the undergraduate honor council for all three years of undergrad I was given the privilege to educate the student body about the nation’s oldest honor code and to protect the values the code upholds; I served as the council secretary and co-directed the community standards orientation programming (the picture on every page includes from left to right Judd Kennedy, myself, and Roshan Patel-former executive board members of council-honoring Sam Sadler at a campus-wide celebration before Sam’s retirement)

Admission tour guide- walking backwards during the week around campus while enjoying the college with some of the coolest people I have ever met; introducing prospective students and their families to the family I have grown to love and the beauty of the college; I also visited my high school during winter break on behalf of the college to speak to prospective students from my area

Alpha Phi Omega- the country’s largest chapter of the historic co-ed service fraternity; through APO I have tutored with local elementary students, made crafts with elderly citizens of Williamsburg, lost numerous games of dodgeball to kids at the Newport News Boys and Girls Club, organized the first annual APO carnival to raise money for local charities; most importantly driving the golf cart around running the campus escort service with other brothers at night, aka giving free rides on bumpy brick sidewalks

Mortar Board- a senior honor society focused on scholarship, service, and leadership; members encompass these values and represent a variety of viewpoints around campus; making books with students at a local elementary school and wearing crazy clothes to promote the annual thrift store held at the Sadler Center (formerly the Univeristy Center); I also have distinctions through Psi Chi, Kappa Delta Pi, Golden Key, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma

Student teaching- 10 weeks of fun and full-time teaching at Rawls Byrd Elementary School in Williamsburg; the teaching certification programs in elementary and secondary education culminate in a full-time teaching experience during the final semester of the program
