The Cookie Phenomenon

Obsession of the week – cookies. More specifically, fresh baked cookies at the Sadler Center dining hall, also known as RFoC, one of the three main dining halls on campus. This week has been a particularly lucky week for me in terms of being in the right place at the right time.

Before I continue, let me explain. I know college dining halls don’t exactly have the best reputation for delicious food, but RFoC makes some of the best cookies I’ve ever had in my life (excluding my mother’s cookies, of course.) I first discovered them around my sophomore year, when my roommate couldn’t stop raving about them. I always doubted her… until I tried one myself. I instantly fell in love. Have you ever had that craving for some perfect, warm, crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside cookies fresh from the oven, but either didn’t have the ingredients and it’s midnight, or just felt too lazy to heat up the oven in the kitchen? These cookies are the answer to your problems.

One downside: I have no idea what days or times the cookies come out. They are not always out everyday, or at any given time. Sometimes, I stumble upon them while going for seconds, and notice that there are still 2 more left in the dessert section. If time permits, I will wait by the counter (along with 5 other people) until the ones behind the counter are ready to be displayed for quick hands.

I am not the only cookie groupie on campus. Take tonight for example:

Friend: *in mid-chew* – cookies!

We scramble to the front of the tray. Approximately 6 more people gather around us, maybe even more. We stand around, waiting for her to bring out the tongs so we can grab the cookies, but the girl to my right decides that using her hands would be faster. Before I knew it, half the plate was gone. My friend managed to get 4; I only got 2. The entire plate was empty by the time she brought the tongs out, gone in a matter of minutes.

I would upload a photo of the cookies to accompany this post, but my poor-quality camera phone pictures are never close to doing them justice. These cookies are so good, they will turn anyone into cookie monsters. The RFoC has its good days and its share of bad days, just like any other college dining hall in the country, but their cookies always hit the spot. It’s the little things like warm, fresh cookies that make it all worth it.
