Staceyann Chin

LGBT

Staceyann Chin is coming to William and Mary Thursday October 15, 2009 at the Sadler Center Commonwealth at 7pm. The Center of Student Diversity is hosting this event in honor of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) History Month. It is free so people should take advantage of seeing such a prominent person for no cost. Chin is an artist of spoken word whose works have moved audiences from college campuses to Broadway.

In an interview with Shayna Robinson and Elaine Carberry, Staceyann Chin was asked,

What is the value of story-telling for you?”

Chin said, “I think of the kind of story-telling I do, which is story-telling with an activist agenda, is a way to slip some medicine down with some sugar because people get to come out and laugh and be inspired and listen to an entertaining story and you get them to see a gay person as a human being. You get them to see a black person as a person who is just like them with feelings and emotions. You get them to see an immigrant who has the same words in her mouth. They are just spoken with a different accent.”

This quote embodies the diversity and the unique flavor within Chin and I hope it stirs feelings of curiosity that will encourage you to go see her. Before you go to the show, I suggest you visit this website:http://www.staceyannchin.com/v2/poems.html to read some of Chin’s works.  They are inspiring and eye opening and you will better appreciate her live performance if you become familiar with her poetry.
