New Kid on the Block

As of tomorrow, I will have officially been an Assistant Dean of Admission here at the College of William and Mary for three weeks. I’m a little unique from all of the other deans because my previous job was in the Athletic Department as a Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach. However, I am extremely excited to see what the upcoming year has in store!

One thing about me that most people probably wouldn’t guess is that I am Mariah Carey’s biggest fan. Really, I am. I know, I know—she does have some issues—but she’s amazingly talented, and her lyrics are usually relatively substantive. (Okay, “Heartbreaker” and “Touch My Body”—maybe not so much, but you get my point.) I chose to use her lyrics from her hit single, “Butterfly,” on the opening page of my blog site because I think it is metaphorically symbolic of the admission process. Our job as deans is to provide prospective students with as much knowledge as possible, so that they may be thoroughly prepared as they apply to college. When those students are admitted, we release them and allow them to “spread their wings and prepare to fly.” College is a wonderful time when young adults meet new people, open their minds to innovative concepts, and discover their own ways of contributing to the world. They learn that they have the power to control their destiny and, ultimately, “fly abandonedly into the sun.”

Can you tell I’m a Pisces?
