D-Day

Today is December 1st. The first day of the month. My brother’s 16th birthday. National Aids Awareness Day. Six months after June 1st. The 335th day of the year. Oh, and today is also the day Early Decision letters are mailed to the hundreds of students who chose W&M as their first choice of college.

Sitting at my desk this morning, I have already answered the phone at least 30 times. Almost each time the ringer has sounded, I have heard a somewhat nervous voice on the other end inquiring about our Early Decision process. Have letters been mailed? Can I know the decision by phone? By email? How many more days do I have to wait in anticipation?

It is this time of year when the Marvelette’s song “Mr. Postman” rings in my ears. “Mr. Postman, look and see. Is there a letter? A letter for me?” All letters were mailed this morning, so no one has heard any decisions just yet. Depending on how fast the mail system can ship the letters across the state, country, globe, students should receive their letters within the next few days. No, we cannot send decisions by email or phone. Yes, everyone will hear within a week. No, I cannot tell you if Johnny was admitted, even if you put Grandma Rose on the phone and tell me how it was done when she attended W&M in the 1930s.

Remembering back to my own ED process exactly six years ago today, I remember how these young adults and their parents must feel! I sympathize with nervousness and anticipation in their voices. My advice is to sit back, relax, and know that your application was carefully reviewed by our admission committee. We saw the very best in you through your letters of recommendation, your accomplishments and awards, as well as your personal essays. Now is the time to be proud of what you have done and wait for the response.

So for now, enjoy the leftovers from Thanksgiving, watch the many holiday movies on TV, and try not to attack the mailman or woman who knocks on your door this week.
