Here we come a caroling!

Eleven a cappella groups, thousands of students and parents, on venue…near a lake?  Yes William and Mary Sings is now being held in the Lake Matoaka Amphitheater, and the College is all a thrill. William and Mary Sings is an annual performance held during Parents Weekend. Each a cappella group gets to perform two songs and wow the Tribe community.

However, William and Mary Sings is just one of the many opportunities for students to hear the amazing voices of their fellow classmates. One of the many student-run traditions on campus are the famous Wren 10s. Every Wednesday night at 10 p.m. on the Wren Portico, a different a cappella performs a 30 minute set for their friends. This past Wednesday, I got the chance to watch DoubleTake (the College’s co-ed competition a cappella group) perform for the first Wren 10 of the year. At least 150, if not more, students took a break from their studies, held up signs, and cheered while DoubleTake performed five songs, three of them being premiers for the group.

Two of the College’s Greek organizations are taking further advantage of this singing craze, and next week are hosting the College’s first Tribe Idol. Out of the auditionees, twelve students where chosen to showcase their talent, and compete for some awesome prizes and the chance to claim the title. And the best part: all the proceeds from ticket sales will be going to Avalon (a women’s shelter in Williamsburg).

So…conclusion: if you come on campus and hear random singing in stairwells and under archways, don’t be alarmed, it’s just another typical day at William and Mary.
